68 el Camino Resto-Mod

Sometimes it's the little things that bring a smile :)

I needed an E-brake signal for the remote start module (don't want the car looping off into the distance on it's own.)
This year and model didn't have a switch on the E-brake. Go figure.
So, I scratched my head a lot, tried all kinds of things and finally came up with this:
A proximity switch from a home alarm system. $5 on Amazon.
I epoxy glued the switch onto the E-brake assembly and then also epoxy glued some rare earth magnets onto the pedal arm.
The cool thing about these switches is that they have both "normally open" and "normally closed" outputs.
So when the E-brake is depressed, now I have a ground signal to the remote start unit, telling it that everything is OK, start the car.

And, just to see how much tech I could cram into this project, I added courtesy lights under the dash, in addition to the dome light. And I wanted them to come on slowly when the door opens and then do a 10-second fade out when the door is closed.
Took me two days to get this working. But, I did get it working.

It's the little things ;)

Damn, and I was gonna just put lights that go on and off with the door switches.....stop it already.........how much work am I gonna have to do now? :D

Good stuff. You're giving me lots of ideas.

Dean, what brand wiring harness are you using? I am thinking of replacing mine in a 71 Chevelle and don't have any knowledge of the different manufacturers.

The two big ones are:

American Autowire and Painless. They are both good. Links below.
I went with Painless because I liked their bulkhead connector/fuse block better. And they had full end-to-end kit, intended for upgrades to electronics. No complaints so far.

Not to hijack Deans thread, but I have heard the sockets on the AAW harness sucks, the lamps fall out. Any truth to this?

Just me, or is putting on trim frustrating?
Regardless, I'm getting there. Looking more like a complete car every day.

I've gotten to the point where I will not supply reproduction parts to my customers, nor will I even warranty the installation of such parts as are provided to me. I only promise to do the best I can, making a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I get that they are the only option, but some of them are so bad.

When talking classic cars, I don't know why big wigs execs don't huddle together and come up with a plan to produce better quality parts. I've never heard anyone say , man this reproduction part is awesome, fits better than oem. That should be their goal. Not where is the cheapest factory in China to get this made. They have to be aware of the feedback they are getting on parts. Some stuff is ok. Emblems are usually ok. But aluminum stuff , is almost always terrible.

If you think back over time the reproductions are slowly getting better, but I'm afraid that if they made them perfect we might not be able to afford them.

True. Best you can do is pre fit each piece before paint. Not always easy if the lead time for parts is way out. Even NOS stuff can be mishandled for years and need tweaking upon assembly.
