40 yr old can of imron, and spot repair.

Painted the car about 1986, had some corrosion around the filler ports that I've been putting off until the right time. That's a 40yr old can of imron from when I first painted it. Didn't smell quite right but it was my best chance at a close match had activator too. Ground to bare metal and 5 coats of white SPI epoxy, blocked out with a tiny block and grades of wet or dry. The round noodle is a piece of foam weatherstrip I'm using to try for a soft edge that maybe I can carefully cut and buff. Ever tried to buff old Imron? Idea was to keep the worked area as small as possible, so we'll see.

The Imron may still be alright, but if the hardener is from 40 years ago, opened or not, I would not use it. I have paint that is almost that old, and most of it is still good. The place that you are using it is perfect for a trial, as it won't take much time or material to redo it should the Imron turn out to not work for your project.
Imron buffs hard after a few days, but being it's a questionable product (old) to start with, I would give it a few days anyway before any sanding.

Have you checked into getting a small batch of fresh paint mixed, 508 GM red should not be a problem to have made in a Urethane SS

Seems unlikely that the old activator is going to do its job. Guess we'll see.
I had no choice Crash, they dont make the same formula Imron anymore and I didn't feel great about using the new activator in this old formula paint. I had one full unopened can of activator, when I opened it it was under pressure and looked very clear. It seems to have worked ok, i sprayed the leftover on a cast iron piece I had epoxy primed and waiting for such an occasion. Today everything looks really good, perfect color match on the car, I may pull off a miracle here and end up with a decent job. I'd settle for decent given the circumstances. I'll post a few more pics tmw.

Renew, what is the significance of 508GM?

I used some old PPG activator, granted it was urethane, not Imron. Looked great, wiped off with laquer thinner long after it should have been cured.

This just makes me wonder if some ballpark SPI activator ratio couldn't be decided on (with help) once the properties of the old material were known. I would personally just never attempt using activator from the 80's, good on you for trying, but wow.

I know that polyol but the unopened can is crucial and, if stored right has a good 90%
Chance it's good, if it's been opened, all bets are off.

If it dont work in the test, I can advise of a spi activator that will and been done before due to the real imron no longer being made.

Wow Barry, thats good news, thanks

That's the color code, if you need to get fresh paint.
So you’re saying that 8554uh imron is actually a match for a factory color of some kind? Or 508gm was a formulated match to that imron color? Most of those imron colors were sort of a proprietary color.

Ok I see. I’m pretty sure GM Flame Red isnt gonna be the same as Imron Flame Red. Imron didnt color match any car manufacturers colors that i know of. They had a color chip book of about three pages of colors that were their colors. Used mostly on large trucks, aircraft, boats etc…
