3M Masking Tape

So what is the take on different colors of 3M Masking Tape? I have always used the blue for automotive masking and paint. When I walk into an auto paint store, all I see is green. Im thinking there is a reason for that?

I think the green is the top line. I use the yellow almost as good, or good enough for what I use it for.

i have enough aggravation in my life without that rubbery green no tearing crap . had this junk been around during the van production days we would have lost a fortune .

Sounds like the blue is definitely not the best choice. I will try and find some yellow to try. Thanks for the feedback.

Hey Shine the green cuts real good with a razor blade:D Green releases cleaner and can stay on longer with no adhesive transfer. Yellow if it's on for a couple of days will sometimes transfer the adhesive. The old beige 233 was my favorite. I think it's still available, but my distributor only carries the yellow and green.

yeah i like yellow myself. green is ok for certain things where i need to make tighter curves because it doesnt tear as easy and the paper stretches a little more. the blue isnt for automotive use. that for waterbase latex house paints. the adhesive doesnt resist the solvents in the basecoat and it CAN leave adhesive behind. there is another tape 3m makes between the yeallow and green price wise but its different all together. the precision masking tape. anyone here try it? i put the link below. i had a little bit on a roll and it was really bad ass but i need to use more before i make judgement. the stuff is ultra thin and leaves as sharp or sharper mask likes than the 3m green fineline. it reminds me of the material they make the tags from on your mattress. it has some type of fiber in it. crazy stuff.

I prefer the yellow myself.. Once I stocked that in the store the Green almost stopped selling overnight.. I could barely give it away.

Regarding that new 3M tape Jim is taking about.

I've used it myself to make some simple two tone jobs and stripes and it works extremely well for that.
No need to use the fineline purple vinyl tape anymore,
but it is NOT cheaper than the other green 3M, I pay about $5.00 Canadian for the 3/4" roll.

Some painters also love it for masking door handles because it's so thin like Jim said.

Its 3M part 06526, I'm curious what prices you guys can get on your neck of the woods.

I didn't even know about that stuff. We never get reps out here in the sticks, which is mostly a good thing, haha. I wonder if that would be good for masking off the unpainted parts of new bumper covers.
Jim C said part #06528, Jorge said part #06526 and both come up.
Extremely high priced from what I saw.
It is stupid expensive but it's a time saver, most shops I go to only use it for simple two tone jobs and stripes. It gives you a very clean edge, doesn't seem to leave any glue residue behind. Right now I can't remember if it's easy to tape around curves and such.

And like Crash mentioned it might be ideal for the edge of unpainted plastic bumpers.

Yeah, I got curious and watched one of the videos, some 3M dork was masking off the unpainted portion of a plastic bumper cover. It looks like it will work way better than the fine line we've been using. I'm gonna order a roll of 3/4" on Monday.
