2003 Mustang Cobra Hood

Recently picked up an 03 cobra (sonic blue) and the paint on the hood has several large (2-3”) blisters where the paint has come off and the gel coat is showing. The prior owner said it has been their way for years he owned the car. Do I need to take the entire hood down to the gel coat or just feather out the problem areas? Also, I’m guessing I need to shoot epoxy over the entire hood prior to base? The reason I’m asking is I’ve heard some people say go straight to base if the gel coat was not broken through but that doesn’t seem correct. Thanks for any advice.

because it is fiberglass I would strip paint with an 80 grit da just to be safe.
If I was doing it after getting the paint off it would set in the sun a full day just in case.

So after 80 grit and sitting in the sun I can shoot an unreduced coat of epoxy and then base the next day? This is a stock hood and is in pretty good shape other than the blister which seems to be a problem with these cars directly from ford. Thanks for the reply.

Strip it with 80, then final sand it in 180 real good. from there a few coats of epoxy and you'll be good to go. I personally wouldn't risk trying to bury 80 grit scratches on fiberglass, but that's just me. Just make sure if you go to 180 you use a guide coat and you get all of the 80 scratches out.
