You guys are freaking awesome Rusty.. truly mean that.. I have seen you all do things I would have probably tried and go scavenge off another donor car if I had to replace them.. You teach thru these threads whether you realize that or not.. I for one appreciate it a great deal

The inner A pillar where the hinges are is a replacement but he had to make the outer piece that covers the hinge area and the windshield pillar patches.

Y'all are truly professionals and seeing the pics is inspiring. Thanks.

Rusty, do you come up with a game plan on a project like this and work certain areas at a time? How do you analyze such a big job and determine where to start? Thats what I'm trying to do with my Fairlane now that its been blasted. It has rust on the firewall , toeboards, side cowls, wheelwells, and rear frame area. Ive never tackled a project like this and I'm finding it hard to get a plan together and figure out where to start. Any suggestions? Thanks for all the pictures though, I definetely learn from them.

Every car is different and it also depends on what other projects we are working on at the time. We needed to start somewhere so he started at the drivers side sail panel and A pillar. We needed to get something new on the car and that area finished to give us something good to look at as we move forward.
On your car I would pick something that is not to hard to start with so you have something finished to look at and keep you motivated.

Brian is rebuilding the inner sail panel structure.

He started by reattaching the old pieces

He cut out the rust areas than fabricated new pieces before he added the cover to the box

Thanks Rusty, I'll do that. BTW have you had a chance to work on any of your own cars lately? I'm really looking fwd to seeing your Fairlane.

I'm sorry to say I have not had a chance to work on the Fairlane.

The first thing you see when you walk in the shop are the rusted out rear frame rails so Brian decide today to start the repair

This thread just amazes me. I don't know of a single shop that has the capability to do this kind of work. If I ever make it down to Florida, I'd be more interested in visiting your shop than the beach.

Couldn't agree more.

Rusty, I always thought that fuel tank through the floor idea was cool on them old mustangs but also always wondered how they did in a rearend hit? Have you seen any after they've been punched hard? Do the tanks split open?

I have never seen one that was hit from the rear hard.

Rusty, how do you position the rails to get them exactly where they need to be? Where are the measurements taken from. Looks great by the way....as always.

The original brace that attached to the wheel wells had 2 small square holes we used to figure the length than another point on the brace we did an X to the opposite frame rail. We measured the width of the originals in the back and how high off the floor they were and welded the new ones in the same place. Brian also use a level across the frame rails where the shackles go.

Here are the factory dimensions for 65-66 mustang if anyone is interested:
