Zolatone - anyone ever use it?

E

edp

I found this coating on another aluminum boat as a factory coating, kind of a mottled look. Im not exactly sure what type of product it is but its Iso free & can be catalyzed with their hardener, they also state on their site they have an epoxy primer for it.

I want to know if I could shoot the interior of my boat with SPI epoxy then topcoat with the Zolatone & if I wanted a higher sheen clear it with
SPI universal? They also have a clear but I'd rather use SPI.

does anyone have any experience with their product?

Thanks, Evan

Evan,
You and I talked yesterday about this and for the other peoples benefit.

The Zolatone colors have been out for many years and are a very good product. Some of you people that have been around awhile may remember the School walls painted with the little colored dots in the paint? I don't know if the Schools are still using this paint or not.
That is what the product was made to do. Very strong and easy to clean up when kids would write things on the wall. (Not me but all the other kids)

My clear working over it? Not sure, it would work but I don't know anything about the recoat windows to say when it would need to be applied.

thanks Barry for the info. Again for anyone else its also a catalyzed product - they have a hardener of their own & their tech guy told me I can use it straight out of the can & clear over it for strength protection or use the hardener & not bother with the clear. frankly I dont really want a high gloss interior of a boat, too shiny, according to them its a matte / satin finish if left uncleared.

I asked him what the product really was, enamel, urethane, etc... & he said "nitrocellulose" something so I copied form their site "ZOLATONE 20 Series is a polychromatic, modified nitrocellulose coating with a flat background color under accenting fleck colors." Sounds more like racing fuel then paint!

here's a link to the catalyst & their site, I''ll post some pic's whne I get that far.

Thanks, Barry!

I sprayed the trunk on this 65 Buick Convertible with Zolatone. It dries to a pretty durable surface that withstood jack stands and spare tires really well. This was directly over SPI epoxy.

Wasn't that suntan lotion ?

Looks like a nitrocellulose paint with a latex added for the specs. I bet it doesn't have much UV resistance?

Bob, I was wondering the same thing on the UV, I have not looked at the specs or have a clue what it is but always though from hear-say it was latex base???

I hadn't thought about the UV issues when I had called & spoke with the rep so i called back today & asked if the 20 series had UV inhibitors blended into it & it does. He describes it in layman terms as kind of like being between the Lacquer's of yesteryear & today's urethane coatings. So not as high as an auto paint but still has UV protection. So I suppose I could apply a coat of clear with a flattener to retain the matte finish or just try it solo & see how it goes.

I would use it solo if you want any possible warranty coverage from Zolatone-do they offer any?, or do some testing if you plan to use a urethane clear over it.
