Wrinkling

Sprayed 2 coats of Speed Clear with fast activator. Noticed poor coverage. Waited 3 hours. Scuffed panel with 800. Applied new base, using 870, and it almost immediately wrinkled in a couple spots. Shop temp was around 65. Lower spot was around 60.

I'm thinking that because of the lower temp, I should have waited at least 4 hours instead of the recommended 2 before repairing. Overnight, of course would have been better.
Another example of don't rush things.
I'm going to put a thin epoxy sealer coat to help lock it up.

I’m not an expert but I suspect the clear was so thin the reducer got through and attacked the base in a few spots. Otherwise it would have wrinkled everywhere, wouldn’t it?

Hopefully one of the pros will weigh in.

I used a thickness gauge on it this morning and there was only a 2mil diff between OEM and mine. I suspect because I use a 1.3 tip. Gonna do a 1.4 today.

You just got unlucky and hit the "window" every material has when recoating between too dry and not dry enough. Waiting that extra hour, or a little heat, would have made all the difference, IMO. I use to use a primer that was very sensitive. In the summer, 10-15 minutes flash it would blow up. 5 minutes it was fine, 30 minutes it was fine.

fresh clear is always going to be sensitive, even speed clear. there is no way even speed clear is going to be locked up enough in 3hrs to handle base being applied to it. let me ask you this...you paint a hood, apply speed clear to it and wait 3 hours. would you have no problem taking a can of mid temp reducer and pouring it all over the finished product and keep pouring it slowly for about 15 min, keeping it wet the whole time and not expect it to soften it enough to wrinkle it? that is basically what you are doing. its going to wrinkle it like paint stripper. only way your going to get away with that is if you cooked it for 3 hours with a curing lamp, let it cool down. then you would prob be ok. i bet even a 24 hr cure this time of year and you wipe clear down with a reducer soaked rag and its going to bite into and soften it.

You are correct. I just got anxious and my wife was asking me to vacuum. I had to do something.

Ever since I got my Sun Gun, coverage issues have become a thing of the past. I can't even imagine how I did without it on poor hiding colors.
I thought I was good too. Then, I shut off the lights and used my light on it and wham-o, there it was.
