wrinkling lacquer

H

HX125

I sprayed lacquer over 2k primer with a sealer over the primer. The color paint bubbled up around the edged of the repair, where it was feathered into the surrounding paint. As the car has the original lacquer finish and I want to spot some repairs, not paint the whole car, my question is this: I see that some of the more experienced painters here are using SPI epoxy primer almost exclusively instead of build primers. Can I spot in the repair after the wrinkled paint is sanded back down to metal, using epoxy for all of the primer work and spray colored lacquer finish paint onto the epoxy?
Thanks, Gary

Back in the day there were clear sealers that helped keep featheredges down, it's much less of a problem these days. I don't think it's going to matter what primer you use, it is the substrate that is sensitive. You might try a coat of SPI Intercoat on the whole panel before applying color, and waiting a good long while before basecoat. You will want to adjust the reducer speed and coat thickness of the base so it doesn't stay wet for very long.

Good advice Crash. Just be careful not to get the base too dry and surely not too wet wait a little longer between coats too so you don't saturate the surface with wet material.

Just a note of thanks. Here is a picture of what the Caprice looked like before, and two photos of the door bottom now. Good advice from SPI users and many thanks to Barry for his input gave me a result I can be very happy with. As Barry pointed out to me, other areas did not come out as well because of the age of the lacquer that I am trying to blend into. But this area and the lower right quarter panel are very nice.

A little late to the party. So Gary what was the FIX ? What did you do to allow the new lacquer to be sprayed over the existing good original lacquer at perimeter of repairs and not have it fail and wrinkle ? What was the cause of the original wrinkling ?

Lacquer doesn't wrinkle, your 2K primer and/or the sealer was wrinkling. I have had great luck using SPI epoxy for repair areas on the old GM oem lacquer finishes that need to be repaired with lacquer-the epoxy doesn't swell or wrinkle like a urethane. SPI's reducers work great in lacquer also.

Here is a little chart I have to help understand possible epoxy problems:
