With hesitation

Guys, Brian answered this perfectly.
The tech line had to be done this way to work
I have learned I have no friends outside of business so turning the phone off was pretty easy.
I have texted back to a few just give me a month or so of not answering the tech line and will call some of my good friends.
This has been very hard on me but Brian and Andy have been running the company for the last year so all is good.
Im 71 and and been married to a record phone-than-pager since 1982.
In still around and to my friends give me a month or so to clean the tech line up.
Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas.
Barry
Hey Barry, you know I'm 75 going on 26.
I love working a little. I've been repairing domestic appliances since 1975 and don't wanna quit. People ask me, When are you going to retire? I tell them, "When I can no longer work." I do consider myself semi-retired only doing 1 to 3 jobs a day.
That's enough to keep me busy and still have a feeling of accomplishment. And of course I'm still playing with cars!!

I do understand the constant phone thing day in and day out would be a bit much after so many years. But just want you to know that your help to me has been immensely appreciated. And I thank you very much. Enjoy your time away from the phone and your (if I m correct) semi-retirement. Dave.

Good for you Barry! Congratulations on building something truly amazing and now I hope you get to enjoy your retirement properly! Sounds and looks like you've left it in more than capable hands with your boys :)

I talked to Andy and asked “ Can I ask a stupid question?”
He said I sounded fully capable….go right ahead!
I’m joking….SPI has given me the means and tech
to achieve far more than I could have on my own.
Thanks for all that SPI does and congratulations to Barry on a well deserved and favorable retirement

Yes, he has officially cut the cord. He has been semi-retired since December 2022, only answering tech calls and coming in the office for a few hours one or two times a week. He has been traveling quite a bit over the last year, but the trips were always being planned around cell phone reception, limiting where they would go. Answering multiple tech calls and messages on a trip is not exactly relaxing. My observation over the last couple of years is that some of the calls were really starting to take a toll / irritate him as well. We get a lot of tech calls at the office that are people simply not bothering to read the directions or just don't want to follow them then want to argue because they are having problems, he was getting a lot of those too which was removing the joy of the tech line for him.

The abruptness caught us a bit off guard as well, but i think it was well played. Had he not just cut all communication the phone would have rang off the hook once it was announced and he would be giving 30 minute explanations to every person as to why.

Nothing has changed from a company perspective, it's not selling or shutting down. the values are still here, the quality is still here, the customer service is still here.. there's just no longer a direct line to Barry. He will still be involved in the background some as well.

I doubt you will see him chime in or even log in here for the same reason as i mentioned above, but I'm sure he still browses this forum on a daily basis as he will never completely detach. He did drop by the warehouse a few days ago- his demeanor was completely different, he was not wound up or stressed out as usual. He has talked for many of years about doing a coastal tour as well as a cross country trip, and now that he is no longer anchored down to this place he should be able to pull it off and enjoy his retirement!

1st....... congratulations on your retirement, Barry.

2nd...... Glad to hear the company will continue to move forward, holding on to, and using the integrity, values, and customer service the company appears to be built around.

After reading the AAE's opening reply, I was concerned the company was going to be closed, sold, or resolved very soon. My concern has been put to rest after reading Brian's reply. Actually it's a big relief, because I have two other mopars sitting in storage waiting for their turn at stardom after the Barracuda is painted in 2024.

Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year to all employees at Southern Polyurethanes, Inc.

Keep up the outstanding product and work you do !!!

have a great holiday Barry. and stop in here once in a while just to BS with us. no longer than i have been here and known SPI and you, i have the greatest respect for you sir.

I'm jealous. I'm only 43 but I can't wait to retire. Hopefully in 10. I can honestly say that this forum taught me all the good I know about painting a car. I'll always buy SPI.

How cool. We certainly will miss him but isn’t it great he did it before health, or family conditions, required him to. No one could deserve it more.

LOL. Every one of us will be hoping we are one of those people he calls down the road to say “hi.”

@Barry, retirement is great... Thankfully I am never restoring another car so this is perfect timing for you! :)..... Enjoy it... if you are ever in Southern Az I hope you saved all your contacts from your old phone stop by and I'll buy you a beer at the Copper Brothel in town.

SPI is too big now for what Barry was doing, I wonder how many guys it would take for PPG and the other majors to do the same thing, its just amazing that Barry kept on doing it for so long. I salute you Barry.

Agreed, the last time I talked to Barry he said that a rep told him that SPI was the only auto refinishing company that he knew that was actually growing in these times! Still I was a bit shocked when I texted a few weeks ago and got the automated "Call the new Tech Line Number" reply... I figured what was going on would be here eventually.

Congratulations! I’m one that can highly recommend retirement ;)
I‘m an SPI fan not only because of the products, but because of your interaction with me many years ago when I stopped by your facility to purchase my first gallon of SPI epoxy after hearing about it and realizing you were near our cabin.

Barry, I have not met any entrepreneurs that I'd like to thank as much as I'd like to thank you. You have combined the personal care, quality, price and delivery speed of product that few can match. Although we have seldom talked, I feel that I have known you all my life, and am the better for it.
