Which gray is gray?

Hi Group,

I bought a box of 3M gray Scotch-Brite and realize I now have two different part numbers.
One is 6448 (looks dark gray and has only 3M on the pad) and the other is 7448 (looks light gray and has Type-S ultra fine).
Which one are you referring to when you say to scuff with a "gray' pad?

Just curious,
Mike

7448 it is....I'll bring back the 6448. Interesting though the posted chart shows a possible green color and the pads I have are darker than the 7448.
Thanks gents!

7448 and 7447 are the typical grey and maroon pads but they are the old style ones. why they even still make them is beyond me. they have been improved and the new version is faaar better. they are thinner but they keep cutting until there is almost nothing left of them. i have the new maroon ones in the shop. i can get the # tomorrow.

i only have a # for the red. with that though it shouldnt be hard to find the grey....assuming they updated the grey as well. they make a 7447 pro but the ones i use arent the pro either. the red ones i use are kinda thin and you can see right through them. they look and feel less quality but they are actually way better.

We stopped using the 3M pads in favor of Norton Beartex many years ago. Out here in the sticks, we never get product reps which can be good and bad, I'd never heard of the 3M "Pro" pads until just now. I wonder how they do against the Beartex?

crash, i use beartex also. i never found the 7447 to be any better or worse than those. they seemed to be about equal. the newer 3m p ads though will blow away the beartex. i have not used the pro series. the one i am using are 64659. i find those to be light years better than the 7447. maybe the pro versions are even better than what i am using....i have no idea. these ones kick ass though. they just keep cutting fast until the pad is worn away to just about nothing. the rep told me a couple years ago its because the abrasive go all the way through the pad the 7447 is just on the surface.

The 7448 are the pro series. Got some yesterday. They do cut well. I like to back them with a gold pad to eliminate finger trails and I just need to flip it for finer scuffing.

those are the same # as the original old style grey but they say pro. no idea there, lol. i have a box of those and mine doesnt say pro. maybe they just decided to upgrade the old greys. 3m is nuts with this stuff. its like their compounds and polishes. tons and tons of part #'s and different products. so unnecessary.

Maybe they just added PRO to the label.

The 7448 pad is where we noticed that the Beartex 58002 equivalent was superior, not in cutting speed or longevity, but in particle size uniformity, or maybe the consistency of how the abrasive is glued to the pad. The 7448 has spots on the pad that can cut through thin primer on some PP bumpers and plow up lines of scratched plastic that have to be repaired. Beartex does not do this, the cut is more uniform.

I just got these but thought they did a good job. Scuff seemed good. Maybe being "pro" they've changed.
