Which Dupont line is best

Ricker

Looking for info on Dupont paint, basecoat/clearcoat. Sprayed SPI epoxy, then SPI 2k high build and block sanded everything back down to the epoxy. Sprayed another 2 coats of epoxy for a couple sand thru's. Plan is to scotchbrite the epoxy and spray a reduced coat of epoxy then base coat. Looking at using Dupont because its available right here where I live if there's any problems, etc. Whats the best product line to use? Should I stick with their clear coat or would you recommend SPI clear? Which one?

Rick,
You can use whatever you like but I don't understand what you mean "its available right here where I live if there's any problems, etc." Is this nearby place that sells you paint going to walk you through gun setup on the phone? Are they going to answer questions on how to fix your problem over the phone or actually come out to your shop to help you? If not, I'd go with SPI clear. The owner of the company will answer your questions and walk you through them. I know from personal experience that when you call Barry he answers the phone or calls you back so fast that you better not be cross the room after you leave a message -- the phone will be ringing before you make it to the other side. If you have a DuPont rep that will return your calls after five in the evening, by all means use his products.

I was thinking that seeing that I was going to use Dupont base, I did not know whether or not I should stay with the Dupont for clear. What SPI clear would you recommend that I use?

It will be going on a truck that I'd call a weekend warrior. It will be driven mostly in good weather (no snow) and I do plan to take it to a few shows.

for showcars i like universal. best clear on the market.. lot of people use euro clear for everyday driver. both are excellent clears and easy to spray

Ok thanks. What about using the Dupont itself. Good paint or not? Should I be looking at another brand?

none at all. i personally havent used a base that the spi cant go over. very rarely do you need to be locked into one system. i have used spi over dupont as well as many others on here. for dupont's base lines i believe spies or standox to be their best line. chromabase back when i was using it was piss thin and so transparent it was like shooting a candy. coat after coat and it still would not cover. the other 2 will cost more to buy but cost less to use.

Have to agree with Jim. I try to use Standox before Chromabase. Not that Chromabase is a bad base but I have had coverage problems with some colors.
I don't like to build up any more product on the work than necessary, especially base. Some colors can benifit from a sealer coat with a shade value close to the color, light grey under silver for example, or white under a yellow which is often is transparent.

Chromabase is decent paint, but it forces you to use their special reducer (Basemaker), which is really overpriced for what it is. Another thing with Chromabase is that some colors don't cover worth a crap so you'll end up using more base.

If that store sells Dupont, see if they carry Spies Hecker or Standox, the base might be slightly more expensive but it is better quality, coverage is usually better. And it will allow you to use SPI reducer with it, which will save you some money compared to the Dupont special basemaker.

I shoot Spies Hecker with SPI reducers and use SPI clears on top without a single problem, matter of fact I know of a few shops that like the SPI reducer better than the expensive Spies Hecker reducers.

Standox works great with SPI reducer. I tell people I can spray their metallics any way I want to and they lay out fine. Bulletproof stuff!

Thanks for the replies everyone. This is some great information, as always from this site. I'm trying to find a color that sort of looks like candy Apple red but in a bc/cc. I know it won't be the same, but something close with the ease of bc/ cc. Right now I'm leaning toward the Nissan/infiniti red, code nah. I also like the Mazda copper red, code 32v. Thanks again.

ok, in rm's carizzma line which is their custom paint line, they have some formulas called candy-ez. there are a couple reds there, your jobber will have a color chip book. they are mostly candy apple red with some metallics mixed into it. only slightly more difficult than a regular basecoat to spray but way easier than a true candy. the red in it is still dye based so it does not cover well. expect 7-8 coats but its not as espensive as some of the other reds out there either.

Ok, I'll make a quick trip over there this weekend and check it out. I always wanted to go there but was told the guy running it was quite an ass to newbie painters like me. I guess he has no time to answer questions that newbies have, and I have a lot. lol!!!

You know what, do yourself a big favor and leave the questions to this forum. All you need a jobber for is to sell you material. The guy has probably never used the suff he is selling in his life. Everyone here will keep you on track.

Every so often you find a jobber who knows what he is talking about, but a lot of the ones around here seem to have spent too much time inhaling solvents and act like they really don't care about your business.
