Where to get "custom" colors mixed?

Not much of a shop question, but maybe it is.

The eventual goal is to paint my 65 Mustang. The original color was Ivy Green Metallic, and I want to stay in that range of color. It's a full repaint as there will be significant sheet metal work. (final paint is quite a ways off)

My understanding is that no one really has the tints to mix the older colors due to formulation changes , removal of lead, etc. But they can get close.

What I want to do is start with the 'original' color and make a few minor adjustments, maybe lighten it up a little and maybe a little more metallic. How do I work with the paint supplier to make this happen? And what is the smallest quantity that is reasonable to mix. I would like to spray a few test panels to see what it looks like. The local guy is a PPG shop, if I remember correctly, but is there a place I can buy online?

Thanks
Rusty

Do you have any original paint on any part of the car that is in decent shape? Specifically a part that you could bring to a paint jobber and let them scan it with their color camera? If so that will get you close to the original. Most jobbers have a range of color chips across the color spectrum (not OEM colors) that you could compare to as well. They would have a something very close to the original color. Maybe 2 shades off either way.

If you wanted more of a metallic effect you could have the jobber substitute the fine metallic for a coarse metallic or part of it. Coarser metallic stands out more. You would be money ahead to look at chips and find the color that way as opposed to trying to convey what you want the color to look like. Could take quite a bit of trial and error. Most jobbers don't have the knowledge to mix outside the given formula for a color.

So my advice would be to first look at some chips at a paint jobber and go from there.

I think the only spot left is a the panel near the door latch striker, so not likely going to bring it to the shop. I might be able to check under the primer that is under the trunk lid. I could try to clean that up a bit....
