When to block sand

Hello all,

Im new at painting and need to ask so I dont mess up. I have taken my Jaguar MKX down to bare metal and have applied SPI Epoxy to the engine compartment and front fenders.

My question is this...At what point is the block sanding and guide coat used. Is it after the 2k primer or can the guide coat/ block sanding be used on the epoxy.

One more question for Barry...I love the white color of the epoxy. Is it the same white base coat that SPI sells? Im looking for a pure white or in other words a white with no other colors added...

One more question! Im planning on primering and painting the engine compartment first. Where do I tape? Do I tape along the edge of the inner or outer rail? How do I make sure a line is not noticable when I paint the outer fender, thanks in advance, I have learned alot from this site.

You can use it on the epoxy to find your high and low areas. Good thing about the SPI, it's sheen helps you find the spots you need to level fairly easy.

Ok thanks. So after I find and repair the high and low spots, I shoot the 2k primer and need to guide coat again? What grit do you recommend for the block sanding.

I would block the epoxy with some 120-180 grit to find your spots you need to repair. On the places you apply filler scuff it real quick with some 80 grit to give it a bit more tooth.

After you shoot your 2k, yes guide coat again and block with 120-180 grit on a long board.

ok...thanks. I will stock up on 180 sand paper and purchase a dura block...what guide coat do you recommend. I have never use a guide coat. Is the powder version the best.

I love the 3m dry guide coat, works much better than aerosol(for me).
