Maguiar's? 105/205?

3m?

Wool? foam?

I sprayed universal, and am sanding it down 600/1200/2000, so I'm looking at what the next step is

thanks, I don't know how I missed that. I did a search for compound and polish, but in the titles..

people seem pretty divided about the 3m and the maguires....tough call...

I have used both products and either one will do the job for you.
The trick is to have ALL those 600 and 1000 grit scratches out before you pick up that buffer.
If you work a small area at time while sanding and then if need be wipe it down with some W&G remover to help you see better things go easier.
And as Bob stated keeping things clean is a must. One piece of sand in your water bucket that gets under your sandpaper and you'll be kicking yourself.

this is what I've been doing.. tell me if it's kosher

I LIGHTLY run over the area with my electric sander with 400 grit, just one or two passes to get the nibs off.

I then go to 600 (3m paper, wet) and wet sand until I see an even, flat surface. for the wet, I'm using a spray bottle with water, no bucket.

I have clean paper towels that I'm wiping away the slurry frequently

next, I'm using 1200 paper on the same rotary sander... one of these, not a DA, so it's not that agressive.

after that, I'm going to wet sand with a block at 2000

THEN the compound on a wool pad

then the polish on a foam pad

sound like a plan?

sound like a disaster?

big jump from 600 wet to 1200 dry. I would at least use 1000 grit 3M film before the 1200, then 1200, then 1500 and finally hit it with 3000 trizac.
I have had excellent results with dry sanding films, very easy to see your progress, my old shoulders dont talk to me near as much either, but I am not nearly as good at safe cracking now that my finger prints grew back, lol.

3m is my compound of choice, a bit more money, but you have spent a small fortune to get to this point, so $5 more dollars worth of compound is a mere pittance. Lots of good compounds out there, I tried Norton ICE, wasn't for me. Presta is good, but the 3m just works better for my style.

hmmm... I always thought that 600 wet=800 dry, so it wouldn't be that large a leap. does it not work that way?

thanks for your input
