What’s the soonest 2k can go on after epoxy spot spray

I’m spot spraying epoxy over filler work and sand thru’s. I’ve always done 2k the following day but is that really necessary? If I did epoxy in the AM can I spray 2k in the late afternoon or evening?

With the temps we are having I wouldn't see an issue with that. If it was a polyester primer or filler I say different, but 2K urethane primer I would think after 12 hours in these temps you would be fine.

yep, its all how thick the epoxy is. i have shot a single coat mixed 1:1:1 and shot 2k over it as soon as it flashed dull. its basically so thin at that point its fairly transparent. any heavier from that point and your waiting longer. one full coat and like crash said, wait a few hours or until end of day. more than one coat of if you have some heavier overlap areas and you need to wait until next day. too soon and you will see the 2k crack like a dry lake bed as it flashes.

Just shot the inside of the trunk lid with white epoxy mixed1:1:.5 with 885 reducer to cover scuffed black epoxy.
Temperature is 94 degrees outside and close to 90 inside the booth and climbing.

In 15 minutes it was dry to the touch. I'm going to give it another hour and go for it. :p

I'll flip it over and paint the other side tomorrow. Promise to let you know if the paint falls of because I covered the epoxy primer too quickly.

That's pretty quick for 1:1:25%. I've never been that brave. 6 hours in higher temps is my minimum for that reduction. Longer when it's cooler. Next time, try 1:1:1 (1:1:50%) seeing that you were shooting over scuffed epoxy. You can go to base quick with that reduction and hot temps. 15 to 30 minutes.

I mixed at 25% because I thought it might help with my coverage of the black. Did end up waiting about 1 1/2 hours before shooting base.
What would be the indicator that I went too early?

I won't flip it over until I'm sure it's no longer tacky.
Went out a few minutes ago just to see how it was doing and I can run by hand over it without sticking to it. Should be in good shape by tomorrow. It's about 95 degrees in the booth when the fans are off.

I had one stick the foam on a stand once....so now I cover the foam with masking paper. Seems to help.
