What’s the best spray cup system to prevent drips in the paint?

Any specific reason why some of you chose dekups over pps? Or was it just one of those it’s what I started with and stuck with it kinda deals?
The Devibliss is all I have ever used. The DeKups work so well I don't have any need to change. I am religious about cleaning everything after every session so I have no issues with paint build up.

Although PPG and 3M products are of the finest I tend to look elsewhere because of cost and their lack of support to the non-professional market. Sometimes you just need to buy from them. Often you can find a comparable or even better product elsewhere. SPI and Lord Fusor are great examples.

Agreed! I use aluminum cups for my Iwata and Sata guns. Saves me a ton of money.

Don
I respect you both so much, @dhutton01 and @Jim C !
Learned much from you both and admire your work.
But, I loath aluminum cups. Everything about them, the vent hole, the cleaning, everything.
To each his own. Still think you are both awesome and look up to you.

I honestly use aluminum cups on most my iwatas still. I know it will sound silly but I hate cleaning them and that reason alone would like to completely switch to disposable. Other than that I don’t mind them. Except if you need to spray at a weird angle.

I use PPS 2.0. I just don't like when they collapse and trap material. I never purge the cup like they suggest.

That's interesting to me what you said about the liner collapsing. I don't purge the liner either but, I can't spray upside down. Most likely that is the reason. Obviously the liner collapses when it runs out of paint but, I haven't had an issue with paint being trapped, knock on wood.

I’m using the PPS cups on my clear coat gun . They only send you one hard plastic cup to put your liner in . So I end up mixing my clear in regular cups anyway and then pour into my PPS. Does make me wonder why I use the PPS. I like to mix all my clear up in advance.

call me old fashioned but i still like the regular aluminum cups the best. i tried pps and other similar systems. hated them all and really saw no point.
Every time I go and have to buy a box of dekups I contemplate going back.

well its been prob 15 years now since i messed with the pps cups but when i did it never reduced the amount of solvent i used for clean up. in fact i may have had to use more. i use very little solvent to clean an aluminum cup and i can clean the cup an gun in less than a minute so i never understood what was to gain. only plus i found was you can spray upside down.

I always used the aluminum cups because I dont paint enough to justify the startup cost of a disposable cup system. But the last 2 guns I bought (DV1's), didnt come with cups.
So I gave the harbor freight knock off 3m cup system a try because of the cheap cost. Ive done 4 projects so far and zero issues. It works great. I think the brand is Spectrum. My only complaints is that they only have one size.

well the key to using less solvent is keep your gun cleaner in a squirt bottle. i used old qt compound bottles. a squirt in the cup until the solvent is about the size of a 50 cet piece in the bottom of the gun. shake and squirt out running the dirty solvent over the cup lid. do that 2 times. pull cup off, a quick squirt down in the gun. pull the air cap and a small squirt on that and your done.

Thanks Jim, thats pretty much what i was doing before starting with the pps 2 system, only I had plastic cups.
What do you use for a mixing/measuring cup? they aren't that cheap but not worth cleaning either.

Yep. I have one of these.

DeVilbiss DPC8 Spray Gun Cleaning Bottle - 16 oz. Capacity https://a.co/d/j9IPp9t

It greatly reduced the amount of lacquer thinner I use to clean gun. On my "good guns" I run reducer thru them afterwards and leave a splash in there

Typically i just use keystone 1qt cups if i am mixing. Half of my atuff is waterbased and just gets poured right out of the gal bucket its in into the gun.

I see comments that both PPS2 and Dekups have a "filter" system between the cup and gun, but can't find any discussion on it. Is this optional? Is it recommended to use the filter?

Seems like over time I have eliminated about any filter and restriction from the gun that I could. I do dig the spray at any angle thing these system offer over my aluminum cup.

Its integrated into the lid. So each time u use a new lid, theres a new strainer. It doesnt cause any issues though.

Harbor Freight sells a knock-off of the legacy (discontinued) 3M PPS 1.0 system. I haven't tried the HF liners as I'm still working through my stash of 3M liners. I'll give it a go when I run out because I'm too cheap to buy new adapters for the PPS 2.0.
I’ve used the Harbor Freight version and they were better than I had expected.

I’d say the cons are:
-quality of the printing of the mixing ratios on the reusable cup isn’t the greatest
-only come in one size
-only 8 disposable cups per box

Pros are:
-inexpensive. You can get the starter kit and the adapter for your gun for less than $30.
-I never had any leaks
-If someone has never tried a disposable cup system, you can try his and if like it you can upgrade to a different brand. And if you don’t like it you haven’t wasted a lot of money.

DeKups come with a little plastic strainer that is not installed. User can put it in if wanted.
I toss them out, not needed if you make sure everything is clean and strain the paint when pouring it in the cup.

They also come with plugs for the cap which is nice for paint with long pot life. I've mixed epoxy, sprayed what I needed, plugged it and then used more over the next few days.

I use aluminum cups with a blue shop towel taped over the lid/vent hole to prevent drips, and it keeps the lid from coming off when the cup is full and you're holding the gun sideways. Sata lids lose their grip over time, once you find that out the hard way you buy new lids and take extra precautions.

I've tried 3M PPS but the resistance of the liner collapsing slows paint flow, especially as it gets closer to running out.
