Wet Sand and Buff Questions

Hi all, I am going to need to wet sand out my 4 coates of SPI universal Clear as I have a lot of drips and heavy areas. After looking at the panels Jim K and I don’t think it can just be done locally or with 1500 and up. Soooooo……

The plan:
Hand block wet 600, 800, 1000, 1200
DA wet 1500, 2000, 2500

Buff using 7 inch orbital
1. Wool cutting compound
2. Foam med cut
3. Foam swirl remover
4.?

Does this sound like overkill or reasonable? I don’t mind the work as I don’t belong to any health clubs :)

Block it flat with the 600, scuff hard to reach areas with Scotchbrite pad to dull and then shoot more clear. Generally called a flow coat.
I didn’t mention that I’ve only done the two doors and trunk lid. I’ve learned a lot from Barry as where some of my problems were. I could try that on a panel and see if that works.

One question.

If I do the “flow coat” method on the doors would that necessitate I do that on the body to match? I am not talking about texture but more like depth and color alterations from one extra layer applied as described above.

That would depend on how many extra coats of clear you apply. If just one, it shouldn't be a problem

That is some aggressive sanding for a novice to take on. Maybe consider skipping the 600. Tape your edges. Dry sanding your first pass will help you see when the peel and runs are gone.

I worry that if you only apply one flow coat you will cut through and get the edge showing. Maybe a pro can comment.

if your going to the trouble to flow coat which is probably less trouble than trying to sand and buff all that out, just block it all out dry with 400 and reclear it 2-3 coats. you wont notice a difference in depth assuming the clear on the whole car has the same peel or is sanded and buffed.

Thanks guys I am chewing on the options. The good thing is that I can work a panel and see what will work best.
