Want add a custom touch

I'm repainting my son's Subaru the stock silver color but want to do something a little custom. He wanted to have some kind of blue accent so I tried a blue flake intercoat over the silver. Well that didn't work at all and it just looked like black dots. I mixed the flake into the silver and that worked good, but still looked liked it had dark spots. They are really big flakes so maybe that's the problem. Not sure if going to smaller flakes would work either.

How about a blue pearl effect? How would I get that?

Hopefully one of the custom painter will chime in but something I have done a lot over the years that is cheap and can be very effective is add a pearl or two and spray a couple of coat mixed in clear or intercoat.
have done some flake the same way but I have found the trick is use very little, that may have been the problem on you flake job.

I think the last one I did I had a table spoon of blue Pearl and a table spoon of white Pearl mixed to a gallon of clear also the number of coats change things real fast and i used two coats before finishing with regular clear.

I'm thinking maybe a blue pearl and a crystal silver pearl.

I'm thinking the silver pearl will keep it in the color range but will create a extra silver sparkle in the right light.
That being said, I think i would try a xirillic pearl for this. a little more pop..

Just a suggestion. You will need to do some testing.

yeah silver is tough to get a color flop with because the metallics just wash out the effect. the xirillic pearls are the way to go but to make it noticeable you will need a lot of it. you going to need to do some test panels to see if you like it over the silver or in it.

I don't think blue pearl will work well over silver except at high percentages, at which point the face will probably start to yellow. I have counteracted that tendency in white pearls by adding a tiny bit of lavender tone to the white, which disappears once the blue pearl is applied. Adding a touch of purple might do the same in your silver, I don't know. I have never tried to put pearl over metallic.
