you were here some time ago with unrealistic expectations.
with your," I will NOT pay your hourly rate and get screwed every time you answer the phone, go to the toilet, have a cup if coffee etc. Nor will I pay your $50-$75 hourly rate" remark, i think the pros here have enough dignity, pride, and common sense to say no on this one.

I've hesitated to comment on this as the first go round didn't go well, but since you were an ass in your response in that thread, I'll just comment on one part of your post.

So you want a very nice.....let's call it near or at show quality level job but the price should be commensurate with the value of the car? Insulting and illogical. Whose fault is it for buying a car with limited value, that they planned to resale, and doing a total restoration on it? C'mon.

P.S. I heard on TV that MAACO is having a sale. Might want to check there.;)

In an effort to say something constructive I suggest the car be offered to a vocational school for a student project. Not for free but with some agreement to cover expenses. The students would gain some valuable experience and some pride in their workmanship.
No true professional is going to do what it takes to do that car for what I'm assuming is some low budget fixed price.

I wish I had a dollar everytime a customer has said "That is more than I paid for the car". I usually tell them they have 2 choices. Buy a more expensive car, or go find a cheaper paint job. They seem to think that if the car is cheap, the labor and material to paint it should be cheap, also. Most, with any pride in their work, do not like doing work for somebody trying to make money off their sweat, especially somebody with an attitude.

If someone makes those demands to me they better have plenty of cash to back the demand, I am nowhere near most of you guys skill but I do want paid good for my quality work. If you want to pay my airplane ticket and put me up with meals while I do the job just let me know!

good point, chris. there are people who have a sentimental value attached to a vehicle and will pay the $$$$$to have the work done. rusty has a thread going on here on one- i think i found on the net about $26k in mint condition?

HOWEVER
i highly doubt he would do the work if he was approached and told how he was going to do the work and how much he was going to charge.

i can relate a lot of what ya'll go through to my days being a carpenter. after burning myself a couple times i learned what to listen for from a customer to help me decide if i take the job or walk away. ive done work where i broke even but the customer made it worthwhile.

That's why I like this forum and the knowledgeable members who who help us less knowledgeable members; they point out the potential traps in our work practices while we learn, or in the conditional requests of others seeking materials and labor as the poster has.

Through your experience, and stated in your responses, I can see that this has the strong potential to be a RED FLAG request.

Thanks for sharing the knowledge!

Funny thing is I live about 30min from his location and would do the car if it wasn't such a big red flag.
I just gave a quote for paint on a 63 Fairlane for the owner who poured $18,000 worth of concrete at my house, and never heard back from him. LOL. He told my how he got his 67 T-Bird painted 12 years ago for $4,500, but that guy was no longer around.

Business ethics aside, would you guys trust a car that you did not sand blast prep and prime? I mean who knows what is under there right? I ask this because a lot of novices try to get that part out of the way and then take it to someone to paint only to be turned away because of the risk of defects down the road due to a bad foundation. I ask this as a novice!

You are absolutely correct.

I've been approached for a job very similar to this, guy even said he would build a booth in his shop. He has a really nice shop with some high end cars. But it's a can of worms I really dont think I will open.

As long as the other party understands there will be no warranty involved, but even then it’s risky business if things go sideways. Someone’s reputation will be on the line and most likely it will be the painters.

I personally wouldn't take the job, however, there are people who have a regular job and do this type of work on the side. They aren't that concerned with quality and longevity. To them it's extra money and they arent worried about reputation. There will always be these type of people because there are always people wanting a cheap paint job.
