Urethane Primer Questions

Hey friends, I've got a "what would you do" question here. I've got just a tad under a gallon of SPI Reg 2K primer that is dated 1 2020. It's Activator is 3 2020. At the advice of members here regarding how activators go bad, I ordered another quart of activator at the beginning of 2023. In fact, it's been in the house, unboxed since I received it. Bummer is, it's not the regular build activator, it's the high build. CRAP.....I could have sworn I ordered regular build, but I did not check it when it came in. Figures, just my luck!!!

Anyway, I have Reg build primer from 2020 and High Build activator from 1/2023. Reading the forums here, I'm finding people who are complaining about the regular build and liking the high build or something else. Not sure which way I want to go now and some of this has to do with $$$. As is, I need to order another Gallon of epoxy and more activator. Just looked at the price and.... ouch!!!

So, would you keep the reg build and just order its activator or would you order the high build and use the high build activator dated 1/2023? Or, would you just start over with one or the other...both 2K and activator?

Lastly, and this is also a factor, how much 2k primer to paint a Mustang? And, am I correct that most apply three coats initially before block sanding?

Thanks!

Open the activator and look for an signs of crystalizing. If none, it is probably fine.
I use older stuff all the time but I am careful to keep the containers closed tightly.

If you want to check it out shoot a couple of coats on a test panel.

By the way, all I have ever used is regular 2K build primer.

The only thing I've ever used is regular/medium build. The primer itself will be fine. It will take you forever and a day to get it mixed back up however.

I always order new activator if it's old, it's a small cost vs. not having the primer harden correctly.

Thank you gentlemen! I agree, small cost vs. potential future issue.

Any idea how much 2K urethane I will go through on this project......69 Mustang???

I've used 2k primer activator 6 or 7 years old. If it kicks--I use it. I used to spray out to test--now just put 4 oz. of 2k primer in a cleaned yogurt cup and mix in the oz of activator. If it's hardened up in a few hours--I use the activator
