Universal Clear Question

Chris_Hamilton

Trying to be the best me, I can be
Wondering how soon I can lay something on a stand without the clear imprinting? Painted some parts (hood trunk lid doors fenders) and hung them to shoot them. Six coats total but only three on the backside of the doors, undersides of hood and trunk lid.

How long do I have to leave them hanging before I can safely lay the hood, doors etc on a stand? Been a while since I did this with Universal so I can't remember.

I'm thinking three days minimum with three coats? Any help would be appreciated.

I am curious what you will rest them on to let the paint breathe.

Don
Why I'm asking these questions. I've hung plenty of stuff in the past but i had time. Week or longer. With this stuff I'm on a deadline of sorts. I had to put a partially blasted car outside to fit all this stuff and the already painted (covered/now uncovered) partially disassembled car inside. I don't want the media blasted car getting rained on, but if I have to redo this stuff due to rushing it that would be like french kissing my grandmother.:)
What have you done in the past Don? I'm between a rock and a hard place here.

I have tried to get them some sun before putting them on stands. My hanging fixtures have wheels so I just push them outside. I had the underside of a hood die back where it sat on plastic masking on a stand. Just where it contacted the stand. So I was thinking something like a few layers of microfiber towels where they rest on the stands might be better.

Turn on the heat to keep them at 80. You lucky dog! :)

Well it was 92 here today. Going to be 95 tomorrow. Did dip into the 60's last night. This ain't New England. :)
When I have time and space I will make stands like that. Space for me is at a premium which is why I just hung them off hooks in the ceiling.
Funny how I can't remember just a couple of years ago when I did something similar using Universal and had no issues. But for the life of me I can't remember how long I let it stay hanging. Too many paint fumes.

I can give you building plans for a shop that allows that....
Unfortunately I'm not in Arizona.....lol. I'd be doing similar to you if I was.

Checked the temperature at 11 and it was 86 in the Shop.:) Going to be 95 tomorrow so hopefully that will help. I'll let them hang as long as I can. Hopefully no rain till Monday around here. Think I'm going to plasticate the media blasted car in the morning, then cover it with a tarp. Hopefully that will keep it reasonably dry if we get T-storms.

Build something that will set on the stands with the point of contact with the parts being a small footprint so to speak. Make them elevated so it's similar to what it would be if you were painting both sides at same time. Might take some thought but maybe can be done.

It gets worse with age! Sometimes I can't remember what I did a couple of days ago let alone a couple years. Reinventing the wheel over and over keeps my mind from turning into oat meal.
