73 Roadrunner -trunk/engine bay/jambs, etc. I was told 1.5 gallons of (sprayable) base to be safe ..... will shoot 3 coats of universal clear, cut/buff (if all goes well) - how much clear ?

I order 1.5 gallons of color on a job like that and end up with .5-.25 left over for use down the road if there's ever and accident. Order two kits of clear, there will be some left over if all goes well but if not you'll be covered. There's a lot of surface area to paint on a mopar.

color/coverage does factor in on how much basecoat you'll need, what color is it and what brand basecoat?

1.5 - 2 gallons sprayable depending on the color. Like bob said, color and brand means alot here.

It'll be DBC .... need to pick a color soon as I'll have engine bay prepped in a couple weeks and then I'm there ....... all is currently in gray epoxy primer - really having a fit over color of this one , leaning to red w/black stripes , maybe a white seal, but that's today ! Not sure what you mean by 2 "kits" of clear , didn't see that on the site , only gallons of clear w/qts of activator @ 1:1 I'd need 4 qts ..... so ...... 2 gallons sprayable/activated ?

You should probably get at least a whole gallon of color for two sprayable. Some reds do not cover well, whatever color you choose, get a sprayout card from your jobber to determine how many coats will be needed. It's much nicer to have some left than to run out, well worth the extra money, imo.

I've had jobs where I tried to calculate the amount a bit too miserly, and got to where I was gonna end up short on some of the final parts. In that case, I was able to make more and use it as a ground coat and use the original mix for the final coats. That's one thing about getting paint mixed, it's almost guaranteed to be just a smidge different each time it's made due to a variety of factors. So you always want to have some of that original mix left for repairs, etc., just makes life easier.

To be safe with 3 coats of clear I'd figure, 2.5 quarts sprayable clear in the engine compartment, aprons, rad support, and including the hood underside, 2 in the trunk and decklid underside, 1 for the door jambs and pillars, and two quarts per coat on the exterior. That's 11.5 quarts of sprayable. I'd order two gallon kits-no need to stress about running short and room for mistakes, it's a lot of surface area.
