Tinting lights with SPI black base

Got a friend that is building an all black "showcar" and i'm tinting his lights for him. I never tint them too dark, but the last set of taillights were a little dark (told him to use some led bulbs lol). The taillights are no big deal, but now he wants the headlights (it's an 87 cutlass with the plastic composite lights) given a very slight tint just to knock the brightness off and make it kinda blend in with the rest of the car. When I've done it in the past, the clear lenses take on a brownish tint. Will SPI black basecoat (being a true black) give me the look i'm after? I usually take some intercoat clear and add a drop or 2 of base and then use multiple coats to get the desired shade, then clear.

not really. the blackest blacks are usually brown until you get to full coverage so when using it as a candy or in my case when i airbrush with it straight from the can it has a very warm tone. when i tint headlights i usually use black candy which is the opposite and its very blue so i add just a drop of redgold toner to it and it makes it more neutral. you can take the spi black base and to the same thing where you are tinting it to make it more neutral. just a drop of a blue basecoat or better yet just a drop of blue candy with the black to cool off the shade a bit.

Thanks, Jim. That makes perfect sense. I've got a spare headlight to practice on, so I can get it just right.

I know the Hot Rod Black has quite a bit of blue in it, and assumed the new black base would be the same way.

Actually the spi black has 0 blue in it, the hot Rod black is a different black tint and does have a small shot of blue.

I had thought about have a black and a black blue but just decided not worth people getting confused and messing something up, so all we got is a black-black.
