Those of you with air dryers what tempature.......

...... do you have your unit set at? When I first installed my unit and turned it on, the tempature was set at 29 degrees. I called the company who sells this unit and they emailed me procedures to raise or lower the units tempatures. The instruction say the tempature should be set between 38 and 42 degrees.

So what temp is your air dryer set at?

i hooked mine up and never looked back. no idea what temp is set at . not sure there is an adjustment.

Harbor freight dryer is not adjustable afaik. It seems to cool to 34 degrees or so based on the gauge.

The tempature is adjustable on the Harbor Freight Air dryer, I've already adjusted it. I can email you the directions if you want. You can even adjust the pressure settings but, not advisable.

I’m not going to mess with it. It has been working great for 7 years without issue. I would think any temperature above freezing would be fine. If it ain’t broke…

I concur. Last I checked, 29 degrees was below freezing so, my unit would have had problems. It was a relief to find out the tempature could be adjusted, along with the good customer service.

I'll see if I can post the instructions later. It's on a Word document with pictures, so that may hender my ability to post it here.

Thanks for your tempature setting.

That's interesting because I have had a refrigerated air dryer for about 20+ years? It has no temperature setting at all? Just an on/off switch?
I went and looked at the HF unit but also don't see any temperature adjustment?
Can you post a picture of where that adjustment is?

i have an eaton now for 16+ years and no adjustment on that either. at least not one that is easily accessed. most driers i have seen are rating their units @ 35-40deg so thats where i assume mine would be.never found a need to adjust mine from factory settings

This is the best I could do. I made the Word Document to a PDF file. Hopefully the link will work.

PDF file attached in my next post.

Thanks much for the document. I do know that the gauge on front is the evaporator pressure. Mine also has that gauge.

Yea I think we have a bit of a language problem because of the translation from Chinese?
They are showing you how to adjust the evaporator pressure. NOT the temperature. Now they are related of course. First they say EV pressure but then they jump from that to EV temperature? The gauge is labeled with both pressure and temperature so I think they are using that to set temperature.

I would not want to get it much below that 38F-42F because of possible freezing of the EV.
But I will look to see if my refrigerated air dryer has that adjustment because I have never looked. I got mine years ago used for a steal and never had the manual. Good information to know!

I put mine right by my blast box as that's the heaviest air use in my shop. This is probably 30'+ away from the compressor. I hook my spray gun up to it too. Other than those 2 very large air use items I don't find I have much if any water problems. As always that depends on your compressor and local weather conditions.

I'm glad the pdf file worked. Let me ask you this since you have more knowledge on how to understand the gauge.

I've attached two pictures. 1st is with the unit off. 2nd us with the unit on.

Should I be using the black numbers to set the EV?.....and I take it there is no temp reading on this gauge? I'd sure like to know what all the color bands are for?

The dryer operates on R-134a, so the blue temps are the ones you'd read. The temps are in °C rather than °F which makes it a bit confusing.

The hot gas bypass (hgbp) puts a load on the system to keep it from freezing when there's no air flow or less flow than is required to keep the suction pressure in the desired range. When you adjust the hgbp you're adjusting the load on a spring. As the suction pressure approaches the lower end of operating range, the hgbp will begin to open to keep the pressure up. The hgbp modulates to maintain the pressure rather than being a simple open or closed device. Works similar to the thermostat in an engine where it attempts to maintain just enough of an opening to hold a steady temp rather than just flying open or slamming shut.

You would adjust the hgbp with the dryer running but with no compressed air going thru it. Make small adjustments and wait a couple minutes for the pressure to stabilize before making another adjustment. HF's specs call for 32-39 psi which would give you an evaporator temp ranging from 35°F to 46°F. I'd shoot for the middle of that range for the hgbp setting.

In the pic above with the dryer running, the evaporator temp is about 10°C or 50°F. If there's no air flowing, the hgbp should be adjusted to bring the pressure down into the correct range. If air is flowing, the pressure could indicate the unit was just turned on and hasn't reached steady state operating conditions, or the hgbp could be out of adjustment, or the dryer could be overloaded by too much air flow or too high an entering air temp.
