Tape color

Has anyone had experience with the color of their masking tape throwing the apparent color match off? I was working on a silver door yesterday and had it outlined in 3m yellow tape and the paint had a yellow hue to it. I never noticed it before and it wasn't until I took the tape off that I could see it was okay. This may not be a prob. in a well lit paint area but I had clouds all day. I may have to go back to buff tape.

Ain't that the truth!!! I'm starting to do mobile paint work myself and
the exact same thing happened to me, with the 3M yellow tape as well.

Now I just don't rely on base coat on top of the masking tape, but it sucks
having to unmask a small section just to compare the color

The yellow tape was reflecting a yellow reflection onto your paint causing grief spraying?

Not sure if you're serious with that question...

Just saying that if I were to use bright yellow masking
tape as a spray out card, it would certainly throw the
color matching out the window, at least to a newbie like me.

Why do I get the feeling this is going to by my UFO sighting? I know what I saw but no one believes me. Yep, Bob, that is what I am saying. The door was outlined in the stuff and made the repair area look a lot different. It wasn't until I took it off that I saw I was okay. Remember, as a mobile "painter" I don't have good lighting. So, there are a lot of shadows or heavily lit areas.

One of my college professors had a huge portfolio of color samples. Each page had two colors side-by-side. The interaction was amazing. Blue and black on one page with the same blue and a yellow on the opposite made it look like two completely different blues -- not just shades of one. AAE, if you had a UFO sighting, there's a two-thousand page color book full of them.

when i did the vans i would always have a zipper i could pull off to check color. i would mask 2 in off the edge then put a zipper over it.
