streaks

After I finished spraying universal clear I see these streaks (pictured below) when I look from an angle. Straight on their not there just at certain angles. I have not sanded or buffed the clear yet. Are these streaks most likely in the paint or the clear? and what would be the best way to fix either?
Every day it seems I do something different wrong.. but I case that's how I learn what not to do haha

Thanks for any help

It looks to me like there was basecoat overspray dust on the panel that got disturbed before it was cleared? Did you tack rag the base before shooting the clear? Walk us through what you did from first coat of base through last coat of clear.

I sprayed three coats of base and ended up with several runs across the top (the fender was sitting at an angle) so I sanded the runs down back to the epoxy in some areas. Wiped everything down with W&G remover then tack clothed it and sprayed two coats across the top then the third coat I did the whole fender. next day I tack clothed everything and sprayed 3 coats of clear. maybe I somehow managed to poorly wipe it down with the tag cloth? I was hoping it would be in the clear and easily fixed but figured its the base.

those look like wipe trails or sanding trails in the base. pictures in the sun at certain angles might tell more... do you remember doing anything specific on those exact spots? is that where the drips were?

Looks almost like someone dragged an air hose across it when you weren't looking :(

When I brought it out in the sun I couldn't get a decent picture or see the marks as much. I'm going to see if wet sanding and respraying the clear to see if it helps, although I doubt it will. I'm out of paint right now but need to order another quart since I haven't done the hoods yet anyway so if worst comes to worst and it bothers me enough I may just end up respraying the fender I guess.

I'm sure there was no air hose dragged across it unless some gremlins showed up in the middle of the night!

are those streaks where you sanded the drips? if i am not mistaken, silver and bright metallics show every imperfection underneath. painted surface must be perfectly blocked. im curious how this goes as i am always learning too. those silver dual ghost flames in my sig were a trying experience for me, especially for a beginner hobbyist. good luck we are with ya!

They look a lot like the lines I make in sanding dust when I blow off a panel. Pictures can really be deceiving.

I hope you did not waste any more clear.. It looks to be in the base as already stated. First thing I thought of when i saw the pics before reading anyones post was tac rag marks..

You could sand, lightly base over and then reclear.. marks would be gone for sure then..

Like I said, I hope you did not waste clear and add more unnecessary mils

what are the best tack rags to use, and what are the worst??

I like the Crystal Premium and tell everyone to stay away from the junk tack rags they sell at Walmart and Autoparts Stores.

I did use more clear as I only cleared 3 coats before I noticed them and still needed to do a second application. For now I think it may stay this way unfortunately since I am out of paint although I still need to order more to do the hoods (yes two I have a fiberglass 3"cowl and a SS hood not sure which I want to use yet so will most likely paint both). I still have yet to decide if I want to respray the fender when I do the hoods. I also have no noticed small pinholes in the base coat in one spot on the door. Are these what is considered solvent pop, or somehow pinholes I missed in filler? I guess I :confused:was bound to have a few screw ups on my first body work and paint job

Also anyone have suggestions for which buffer and pads to use? It seems as a favorite cut and buff kit around here is the 3m perfect-it and think I will go with that.
I have a few runs in the clear that need to be sanded down. I am planning on wet sanding with 600, 1000, 1500, 2000 then use the 3m perfect-it process. Does that seem like I'm on the right track?

Oh and the tack cloths were from this summit racing painting kit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-UPPSKIT/. I had thought I had ordered to surgical blue tack cloths awhile ago but apparently it was more of a thought than and action and when it came time to paint these were all I had on had. Never expected a result like these streaks but apparently I was wrong and will make sure I use better quality cloths next time.

In my opinin you can't go wrong with the 3M system. yes it costs a few dollars more but it works very good.
A little goes a long ways, so the cost per car is only a couple dollars more at the most.

Did you ever say what color you used? thx..

does the 3m system have pads that go with it or is there some other brand or type of pad that would be best? The color is Gun Metallic there's a picture in my post #13

those are pinholes in your filler for sure, 3M has pads for their products I'd suggest wool and slow speed if you're new to this. On your next project order enough paint plus some extra for sure.

I ordered more paint already since I still need to do the hoods.. I figured the holes were in the filler.. don't know how I missed them before clearing :/
