spray on flooring systems? questions

I know it is very off topic but since you guys are some of the smartest coating people I know I figured its the best place to ask.

I am moving into a new shop and would like to coat the concrete floors to make it look and keep things clean. Does anyone have advice/experience with epoxy floor coatings, or the spray on polyurea type coatings (a bit like bedliners?) Pitfalls? things to think about? suggestions for great products (the last thing I need is this stuff to lift or look poor.)

Thanks!

spi white or gray epoxy. be forewarned that painted floors are slick as hell. no brakes and you can bust your butt easy.

I bought one of the Rustoleum (the name should have told me something) garage floor epoxy kits 4-5 years ago and applied it to the floor in a section of my shop after scrubbing and mopping vigorously for days. It was a two-part, 3:1 mix system. It has peeled off in large sections starting about a year from when it was applied. It sounds stupid, but the cheap oil-based garage floor paint in the no-name gray can has held up better so far. Surprisingly, it doesn't lift immediately if you spill a little solvents on it either.

I was always going to use U-coat it brand on my garage but never got around to it. Like anything a clean oil free floor is probably the most important. At a factory I worked at years ago they had a company come in and grind a thin layer off the top and then did their floor epoxy system. It was great but I imagine it cost a fortune.

I've had a lot of people tell me that about the oil based stuff. Even for outdoor locations that get a lot of use they say it holds up great.

I've debated on whether or not to do my shop...it would cost quite a bit to do the whole thing. I've thought about just doing the center section and on into the paint booth. These floors can take a beating...After getting them all pretty I wouldn't even want to walk on them, much less drive a car on them or worse, drop a blob of bondo or resin on them. LOL

mine was done with a 2 step process. i got if from a company called armor coat. it was basically white epoxy primer almost like spi stuff then it get top coated with a white linear polyurethane which is basically awl-grip. it doesn't level or smooth anything out like a 1/8" thick epoxy coating does but man its indestructible. the grey oil base stuff works but won't hold up to chemicals at all and you'll need to do it every year. mine is bright pure white so it makes the shop waaay brighter than a grey floor and i can pour acetone all over and it won't touch the stuff.

Check out legacyindustrial.net, they carry sealers, densifiers, stains and epoxy coatings. Haven't tried it myself, but am going to use their sealers for the driveway and garage floor next summer. They have numerous products for concrete treatments depending on what you are trying to accomplish.

I used http://www.originalcolorchips.com/ and it cost right at $1.00 per SQ. FT. This was with primer, gray 100% solids epoxy, flakes and urethane clear.

I like it but, Shine is right, even having the flakes for texture it was a little slick when new. Now with a little wear and scuffing of the clear, traction is fine. If I were to do it again, I would use #2100 production clear instead of colorchips urethane clear. It was a 2 part product but I found when I tried removing a stubborn stain I was able to completely remove the clear with lacquer thinner. The underlying gray epoxy was unaffected, though.
