SPI black expoxy as underhood parts topcoat?

Hi List,

I've been browsing the archives for an answer to this question and I believe I found it indirectly here; http://www.spiuserforum.com/forum/s...rimers/1782-epoxy-primed-metal-stored-outside
Recently I sprayed 3 coats of black SPI epoxy on under hood parts ( L&R inner fenders and radiator support), which were stripped down to bare metal, that in the past I normally would use GM Reconditioning Black paint. After a few days the SPI epoxy gloss and texture settled out to look just like the GM reconditioning black.
The question I was asking myself is if the SPI black epoxy would hold up to the occasional SUN and UV exposure when showing the car with the hood up and also would it chalk with age.

Thanks,
Mike

FWIW I did that under the hood of my 65 Mustang and used a small detail gun (Harbor freight) and it turned out magnificent. It looks just like it is supposed to look, not glossy yet super durable. When I detail the car I just wipe it down with mineral spirits and it looks new again.

Looks great. How much reducer if any did you use?

I like the epoxy used for wheel wells but I like the Matte black even better. I typically spray them with epoxy, sand and then spray matte black.. Either will work fine and I assume the epoxy will be more durable but I just like the looks of the Matte black.

This is an awesome thread since I will be dustless blasting my floors in the next 3 weeks. I just ordered some black epoxy after speaking with spi about spraying the bottom of my car. I wanted to lessen the sheen to a little more than matte. I was told to thin the epoxy with some acetone and spray a test panel to get desired results. I'm doing the whole underneath of my chevelle. No more undercoating down there. Cant wait for a nice clean underneath.

The SPI epoxy black gloss matches GM Reconditioning Black (old formula) almost exact using a 1.4 tip.

Mike, are you talking epoxy black primer?

Craig, I just do not remember, I don't think any because I wanted to avoid gloss. I used the cheap small harbor freight touch up gun with the swivel cup and just went to town on it. Spraying SPI primer is where I learned how to use my guns.

I would also recommend it for the bottom of a car, and the rear end housing. This is pretty much how it looks after a few years of casual use. If I scratch it while removing the trans (I have had to do that twice now) I just scuff and re-shoot. Rain and weather cant touch it, I swear you could use this stuff as a pool liner.
