some oddball but cool recent projects

seems lately i have had a run of non automotive projects to do so to add a little variety here i figured i would post some pics.

since mitch posted his nice red door i figured i would post these up. very similar doors to his but these were for a house. these were just plain white fiberglass door that a builder wanted faux finished to look like wood. i had 4 of these and a 10' x 12' garage door. i think my finger tip was going to fall off from airbrushing non stop for days on this stuff. came out very realistic though. no one working on this house could tell. even up close. this is all wanda base with spi matte clear.

here is something i designed in cad and 3d printed. i assembled all the parts like a model. primed with spi 2k hb, wanda base and spi matte clear. someone online cought a pic of this a few weeks ago and the media blew up. a newspaper here did an article with the headline "new jersey man makes 3d printed bomb". i saw that and was like ...really lol. i had emails, phone calls and txts from people all over the country. police cheifs, us govt ordnance people. it was crazy. glad it died down though. they could have worded that headline differently. haha.

here are some small speakers i 3d printed, painted and faux finished to look like wood. these were finished with spi 2k hb, wanda base and universal clear.

last but no least i had a former customer of mine stop by with this old gas pump to restore. this thing was in pretty bad shape. the girl wanted this done for her boyfriend who owns a gas station. i painted it in the colors of his station. she wanted to get rid of a standard globe and turn it into a clock so i became a clockmaker and designed up a face in that old 50's style with his logo on it. i had the faces printed then made up the brackets an did the lighting.

All fantastic Jim. Do you have your own 3d printer or do you source that work out?

i have had my own for about a year and half now. that thing is always printing something. it buzzes along 7 days a week, prob 16-20 hrs a day. on the safe those hinge finials were missing so i designed those in my cad software and printed them in plastic. i took the prints and sent them to a guy i know in Delaware who used the prints to make an investment casting then cast them in solid brass for me. its pretty cool when you need something you can just design what you want on the computer and print it out.

Amazing stuff Jim, I can not believe how good your woodgrain is! Really wish we lived closer so I could shadow you in my spare time.

haha wow thanks guys and yeah jeremy that was one of the articles. there were a few of them going around. as for the woodgrain, i come from a family of wood workers not to mention myself so its just one of those things i managed to get a good technique for. there are quite a few different species i have worked out and can replicate which comes in handy when some of the builders of these high end homes around here need stuff done. it works really well for houses along the shore because you can build something in plastic to hold up to the elements but still have the look of the wood.
