scuffing intercoat

When going out of the recoat window for the intercoat you scuff with a gray pad correct? Well when I do that then shoot another coat of intercoat it shows all the scratches, some I need to wetsand out with 800 is this normal. It seems like it creates more work. I have been just wetsand with 800 instead and after one coat there are no problems. Thanks

No need to sand or scuff it at all unless there's trash or texture problems.

it should not show the scratches unless you have dirt caught in them or you have a metallic base that you have broken through to.

I was thinking it was probabaly caused to dirt, I barely push when I scuff and some scratches the are deep. The only reason I scuffed was because it sat in intercoat for over a week before I got back to it so I gave it a quick scuff.

i will scuff it once in a while if its going to sit for awhile. i always use a grey scotchbrite. i then clean it off with kc20 or glass cleaner and its ready to go. never had any scratches show up.

I'll start keeping my scuff pads in a closed box from now on and get out of the habbit of just picking one up that's been sitting around. I love using sprayaway glass cleaner, works great. Now I have used SPI W/B cleaner and it tends to soften it up, the kc20 is HOK is that a waterbased cleaner as well?

Kc20 is hok but its basically overpriced glass cleaner. I stopped using it and went to home depot and got the zep glass cleaner concentrate. $8 makes 32 gallons. I then mix about 25% spi 700 into it. Works really well and cheap as hell.

No kidding? I might have to try that! Do you use tap water, or distilled water?

Also please be aware that there are different gray scotchbrite pads.

7448 is a light gray and is equivalent to 800-1000 grit sandpaper (this is the stuff you want IMHO)
7446 is gray but is equivalent to 120-150 grit sandpaper (big difference)
6448 is dark gray and is a light duty ultrafine pad similar to the 7448 but not as high quality.

If you buy your Scotchbrite pads from a jobber then you should be all set but if you just pick up a gray pad at the supermarket there could be a big problem.

my tap water isnt filtered and it has "stuff" in it. i like that cleaning combo though! thanks again jim c for cleaning combo and thanks 68 for scuff info! any scuffing or sanding i do unless its on primer to be buried has to be with a new clean virgin scuff pad or sandpaper. nothing like getting black overspray/paint scuffed/sanded into white base...

on these pieces I know I didn't break through to the base, now if there were scratches still present just in the intercoat and not the base, will the clear fill the scratches?

Yes, no problem with wetting out the scratches in the intercoat-they will be invisable. Do a water test on it to confirm if you're worried. Form406 made some important points to consider-make sure you don't contaminate your work with anything that'll transfer a stain or color your scratches like a used scochbrite.

Yes that's a very good point, something to remember.....thanks all for the info!
