Hi all . I have a question. have a young customer with a Dakota pu who wants a satin black paint respray just on the exterior of truck. Will be a daily driver and occasional trip in the woods and off road. What is the best SPI product to use? I am thinking black epoxy instead of the matt clear or ss matt. Any thoughts. Thanks

If you want to make your life easier go with the matte black SS, way easier than epoxy and the best finish.

But considering the intended use of the truck, epoxy may not be such a bad idea. Will save him some money, but it may cause you more grief when it comes time to spray.

No, I would use the SPI Flat Black, because it's much easier to create an all-over uniform look, and it's more repairable from a panel painting perspective. Black epoxy makes an excellent sealer for an all-over satin black finish, though.

As stated above the 2201 would be what you'd want to use. SPI Black Epoxy for a sealer then the 2201 SS. Stuff sprays like a dream, really easy to lay down nice and slick. You can adjust the flatness by adjusting your mix ratio. 4:1 - 8:1.

I think satin black is an awesome choice but I have never been confident in figuring out how to keep it looking good. If you scuff it or put a mark in it that you want to buff out, or have to clean off a suicide bug, you will have a shinny spot. Supposedly they make special satin friendly products now that work specifically for satin finishes and do not put a "shine" on. Now back to a story I have told on many forums. Back in the 60's, I had a Blazer with a textured top. The top started looking bad so I stripped it and applied a satin black paint. Waited a couple months to put a coat of wax on it, and yup, turned shinny. In about 12 hours, the satin finish returned. It had a memory and any time I buffed a spot or the entire roof, it would always return to the satin finish. Don't know what it was or if its still out there, but I have never been able to duplicate that finish.

When I painted my Boss's Corvette matte pearl white (SPI matte clear) and SPI matte black last year Barry sent me some Wizards wipe down in a spray bottle for him to try. I don't remember the actual name but I'm sure Barry will tell you if you ask. That stuff is good for maintaing the finish and keeping the bugs from sticking without glossing the finish.

Chris, has your boss said anything about how he likes the product? I would imagine is vette is probably not a daily driver, but he may still have some good input to offer on maintainance?

He was using it last summer I know. He seemed to like it. But if Barry recommends it you know it is top quality stuff. I trust Barry's recommendation.
