can you convert an RP to an HVLP just by changing out fluid needle/ nozzle and air cap?

No you can't. I emailed sata this question two weeks ago. The air ports from air valve to gun head are smaller on hvlp. I verified this by taking an RP and hvlp apart. You can swap/convert with iwata and devilbiss.
