Question on clearing Trans am snowflake rims

I have a set of Pontiac T/A snowfake wheels that I will be painting and clearing. I am using a diamont base for the painted area but would like to apply universal clear to the whole wheel face which will have natural aluminum spokes. Is it ok to shoot the base, unmask and then clear the whole wheel or will I have adheasion issues on the bare aluminum. Thanks Mike

If this is just a show car that doesn't see use it might last awhile. I haven't found a spray clear that adheres well to bare machined, blasted, or polished alluminum. Powdercoating is an option. I would just sandblast/epoxy prime/paint/clear the colored areas of the spokes and keep the face bare aluminum and just polish them by hand when needed.

The '70 GTO snowflake wheels I am going to refinish are Endura rubber molded over a steel wheel. I'm not sure if they are supposed to have a rough finish or can be considered correct if they are filled and sanded smooth.

Why not use activated adhesion promoter on the bare aluminum then clear?

The trans am snow flaks were endure rubber like the 69 GTO bumper, clear will stick to them if cleaned real good.
I would clean with dawn and warm water and then wash with 700 at least twice and let set overnight, then clear.

Activated adhesion promoter would work, not sure necessary?

From the original post, it seems the wheels he is working on are actually aluminum, but I have not seen an aluminum snowflake wheel.

Question about my Endura snowflakes. I would love to know what they looked like when new, if they are epoxied up and smoothed out before paint, would that take away from their value? Did they have a satin finish?

GM, did not make the snow flake in aluminum, they are hard and a lot of people thought they were but with a lot of pressure, you can slightly move.
Are these the original wheel that came on the TA or after market?

I bought the wife a new TA in 78 and thought they were aluminum, until there was a recall for potential explosion of wheel.

How about pics? I know I can stick a magnet to the back of the ones I have, they are definitely steel with rubber over the top.

Barry, these are definatly alum. They were made by western wheel co. for gm. Gm used 2 different manufacturers for there snowflakes. The wheels I am working on have been media blasted and there is no endura material in them here is a link to the wheel I have. It is the same as the one in the 1st picture.

Nice wheels, mine were the endura, when they recalled I thought they were nuts but he showed, me with a screw driver, and they look like the picture you sent.

Maybe these were the wheels you had?

Yeah, those are the ones! So I should call them "honeycomb" and not "snowflake," then. The owner calls them snowflakes. I don't want to paint them with a spraycan, though maybe I will try and get a can of the so-called matching finish and attempt to duplicate it with flattened 2K
