Question about a seam....

If I wanted to do away with this seam here, what would be the proper way? Just weld it up like it was 2 pieces of sheet metal butted up against?

Fiberglass filler?

Would there be any down side to doing away with this factory seam?

I borrowed the picture from Google for reference..

Thank you

Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they did that kind of seam in high stress areas to allow slight movement and not show a crack, so I would leave it.

Some of those seam were used because the press tooling would not punch said shape in one fell swoop. The other reason for that style of seam is that spot/pinch weld seams get things moving down the assembly line so much quicker. I would butt weld that seam without a second thought. We eliminated most of the pinch welds and leaded seams on the 55 wagon.
