Problems laying down enough primer

I have an older DeVilbiss gun, do not know what tip size is on it and I can't seem to get enough material out of it even when I run the adjustment feed knob out all the way. The gun is probably 40 yrs old and works great, at least until I started to shoot SPI Epoxy Primer. I suspect the increased viscosity of the primer (relative to lacquer primer and single stage paint) and tip size is my problem. I have tried reducing the primer and it helps a little but not enough. I don't know how to determine the tip size. The only markings I find on the gun and nozzle are Type-MBC, H55 333957, AV-15-FX, and No 54. Does any of that help determine what I have?

I assume there is a correlation of tip size and rod diameter - is that info available somewhere? Assuming I have too small a tip, are there even parts available? Thanks. -Bob

Now that I think about it I guess the rod diameter doesn't have anything to do with tip size since its tapered on the end.

Have you googled the gun, part numbers, etc? I have had several old Devillbis guns and have always been able to find parts diagrams.

The gun may be obsolete and no parts may be available.

And yes, your needle and tip are too small.

I think that’s an old siphon feed gun. Time to invest in a new gun imho. The savings due to material waste will likely pay for the new gun… ;)

I checked on DeVilbiss's webpage and didn't find anything helpful. I also called several large distributors in the area and as soon as I told them how old the gun is they didn't want to talk about it - just wanted to sell me a new gun. Even if I find parts, etc I need to know what I'm coming from.

99.99% sure that gun is obsolete and no parts are available. I had one and scrapped it years ago because I couldn't find parts.

I almost hate to open this can of worms but what's available that's "reasonably" priced that comes with a variety of tips. I'm only talking about shooting primer.

What's your price range, $200, $150, $100 or less?

I'm not ashamed to admit that I use a Harbor Freight gun. It's the green one and sells for about 25 bucks. It comes with a 1.4 tip which is perfect for epoxy. For me it works well, but what do I know, I'm not a painter.

I have a knockoff of that gun that I used on my first frame off build 35 years ago. :)

Nothing to be ashamed of. Heck epoxy can be applied with a paint roller.

That may well be the ticket. The specs don't mention tip size - how is it marked on the actual gun?

Do you use disposable liners/cups with that gun?

Harbor Freight sells a couple of different adapter sizes so you can use their disposable liners / cup.

So is the 1.4 tip sufficient for epoxy primer w/o reducer? I notice the Vaper series Shine mentions has guns with 1.4, 1.8 and 2.3 mm. I assume the 1.8 and 2.3 could be throttled back to function much like a 1.4 but then have a lot of upside if need be?
