Primer gun / tip reccomendations.....

Ok, searched the forums til my head spins. Looking to pick up a new primer gun. Nothing expensive, I dont do this for a living, just something to lay some decent primer so I can block it out. I'll be laying some SPI epoxy, then either high / regular build primer.
I currently have,
1. cheaper gravity hvlp, 1.4 tip, gun from Grizzly tools. Sprays great, nice and flat. But since its discontinued I cant get any bigger tips for it.
2. will be picking up a tekna copper for the base and clear
3. need a dedicated primer gun with correct tip.

I've been looking at guns with a 2.0 tip which would put me in the ballpark with the tech sheets for high build and regular SPI primers. That sound right ??

One 2.0 tip gun that has alot of positive reviews on multiple forums is a gun from summit racing. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-02-12020/overview/ but no additional tips are available for it. No info on cfm requirements.

Another 2.0 tip gun is http://www.tcpglobal.com/TCP-G6600-20_2.html#.VNdzDi4mGNo additional tips are available in all sizes for $19 each. And this gun only uses 4-7 cfm.

Both are cheap enough but the tcp one could work as a dual purpose if need be.

So would a 2.0 tip be my best choice for "build" type primers?? How do my gun choices look ?? Any other recommendations for a cheaper primer gun ??

Thanks guys.

I use a devilbiss finishline 3, You can get them with 3 tips. If its a dedicated primer gun I would get the set with the 1.5, 1.8, 2.2

1.5 - epoxy
1.8- 2k primers
2.2 - Poly primers

Just my opinion but the gun sprays primer really nice and I have no complaints.

I've tried the $40 for poly's and it seems like I have to blast the air to get them to perform.

The finishline 4 is the same gun.

I saw that vapor gun http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200319459_200319459
looks like an exact match to this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/271750189394?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

only question I have is there neither of those guns have a flow control on the bottom of the handle. My grizzly gun has that and it really helps out. The guns above just have the fan control (knob on the side) and the material flow on the rear. Do we need the air flow control ???

The summit gun has the flow control on the bottom. I know I'm splitting hairs for a low end gun. But would it be fair to say to grab a gun with a 2.0 or even a 2.3 tip and just turn it down if need be. We know we cant adjust up for volume.

There's lots of cheap guns available for poly primer:

Some of the big tip guns will spray medium and lighter viscosity primers ok with the fluid control choked down.

you need no air control on the gun . i shoot epoxy , slicksand and gel coat with the vaper. . buy from ebay your stuck. buy from northern tool you can take it back .

I'm liking the vapor and the tcp global guns. Going to pass on the summit due to no tips available. I actually took a look at the vapor and tcp additional tips and needles. They look identical. In fact, they look identical to my grizzly gun tip and needle. So its going to be one of those two guns with the 2.0 tip. Do you guys think I should grab a 1.8 just in case? Or would I be good with just turning the gun down if need be ?
thanks for the help guys.

There's a lot of guns to pick from. I have an Astro that gets used for epoxy and urethane primers-it is 16 years old and still going strong. Never had a kit put in it.

I have never tried Vapor guns but if Shine can get 4 years out of one, that would be the way to go.

My experience with other really cheap primer guns (HF, ebay) was that they were literally throw aways after several years, which I got tired of. I then paid a little more, about $78 I think for a 1.9 Astro EuroPro. I use it for urethane and even polyester primers. I have had it for about 3 years, It performs great and it looks like it will last many more years.

i didn't exactly take good care of it :) plus i dont do as much as most of you. but for 45 dollars i could buy a new one for each project .
