Prep new cast iron.

I have some new brake calipers that want to paint . I don't want to sand blast .Do you think a good scrub with a red pad and 710 would get me by for epoxy to stick ? Thanks.

new cast iron is saturated in oils. Takes alot of scrubbing. Then they sit for a while, and they can show oil again. I always get a repair kit from rockauto and disassemble the brand new ones. I actually think you are closer to paint on old ones that have heat cycled all that oil out.

Thanks. I paid too much for these lone star corvette calipers with a special O ring seal to pull them apart..I would never get them put back together. As a painter ok ,as a mechanic not so good anymore .lol.

Maybe clean them the day before, then come back the next day, clean them again and shoot them.

maybe a heat gun after you feel they are clean enough. At least you can stay away from the piston seals that way. If it does not turn shiny again after some heat then you should be good for paint.

I know they sell high heat caliper paint for those, and that heat is what boils out that oil on regular calipers. I just think they count on that oil making the cast iron last longer unfinished since it oozes out and forms an oil shield on them.

Sarge, if it were me I would clean really well with detergent, brush and scotchbrite first, heat em up with a heat gun and let em dry in the sun, then clean again with 710 and scotchbrite, heat em up for a while and let em dry in the sun a while. Then prime and paint.
