Poor adhesion problem- buddy needs some advice

I have a good friend that did some metalwork on his Ford F250. After the bodywork was completed, he epoxied the area with DuPont 2510s and then went over it with Chromabase and clear. The result looks good but the Chroma base has very poor adhesion to the epoxy primer. The base was sprayed within the window of recoatability for the epoxy, and the epoxy sticks great, but not the base. The base has flaked off in certain areas when he put the doors back on- scrapes and so forth. In the areas already scraped, you can easily flake off more color/ clear with your nail. Also, the clear sticks fine to the base, no issues there.

The base was not activated- could this be his problem?

Any advice will be appreciated!

"Within the window of recoatability" sounds like a concern to me. If the base was sprayed over epoxy that was pretty far along in the curing process, and the epoxy wasn't scuffed or sanded, it would be asking a lot of a basecoat to adhere under those conditions. Most on this forum spray a very thin "sealer" coat of epoxy just before base to strengthen the otherwise "weak link" between basecoat and primer.

Thanks for the reply. The Base coat was sprayed within an hour of the epoxy being sprayed- this is what I do not understand. He figured he would be ok since it was so soon. I could understand if it was a few days later.

What reducer was used? How soon was the clear applied?

Maybe contact a DuPont rep-he paid for that service with the cost of those products. Let us know their reply.

A few questions, was this dark blue, Dark green or black?
Liked asked need speed of reducer and temp at spraying.
Also, is 1 hour the right time frame for the epoxy and temp at the time?
My first guess with all the unknowns, is he trapped solvents in first coat of base and it broke adhesion.
Either that or the epoxy had not set long enough.

Disregard my post then. I was thinking that you sprayed the base over days old epoxy.
