Picking basecoat brand

A

aggie jon

Trying to decide which brand basecoat to get for my truck...

My local options are:
BASF (diamont)
Wanda
Nason
PPG

I have also talked to Chad S. about ProSpray, just have to get a modern color to offset to. I know this is a can of worms, but I guess I'll open it anyway. I'll spend the money to get the right one. I'm not cheap but I am economical and don't want to waste good money. For the time and effort invested, seems like a waste to cheap out at the end. Feel free to rank them 1-4 (or 5 if you add prospray in there).

I shoot ppg(dbc) daily and have no complaints. The few times ive shot pro-spray I really liked it.

Diamont is nice also. Heck ive had good luck with chromabase(dupont). I had a nightmare of a job using nason but I was taping and doing stenciling.

I actually purchased a gallon of shopline today for a bs job I'm doing. Can't wait to see how this covers. Lol

i have been using diamont for years. very good. i just finished a yellow 69 camaro and the customer brought over wanda base. i just had hime supply it because he liked wanda's color for that specific paint code. this is the first time i ever sprayed it. i have to say it was damn good. didnt cover very well but that formula in a bright yellow will always be transparent in any paint line. sprayed very nice and was 1/2 the cost of diamont. i think im going to try it on other things here in the shop in the future.

orange, i have never used the shopline but my buddy owns a resto shop down the street and he does real top notch stuff. he did his little beater truck in the factory red. he was really surprised. it covered in 3 coats. topped it in spi universal and it looks fantastic. a gallon of the red was less than 200 i think. cant beat that i guess. thats all the feedback i have ever heard on that line of paint and only on that one color. maybe a fluke maybe not. let us know what you think of it.

Thats good to know. I'm spraying pw7 white and thats the factory color. Its just a quicky job on a work truck. Gonna top it off with production clear.

I figured that the nason was out. just mentioned it because I have a jobber nearby. I'm leaning towards the Diamont or Wanda. I know there is a PPG jobber locally, but not sure I want to deal with him. Guess it will ultimately come down to who can make the color I want, and which one dollars out. Glad to hear about the good experience with Wanda. I'd never heard of that line before coming and hanging out at the SPI forum.

akzo bought them a while back. my friend and neighbor is a national sikkens/akzo rep. he was telling me they bought the line becuse the jobbers needed something decent that they could sell walk in customers over the counter. he said that as reps they are not supposed to sell it, push it or even pretend it its theirs. they are strictly sikkens and lesonal. he also said that everyone is really liking it just like me. the unfortunate part is that if too many people like it you know akzo it going to have to cheapen it up somehow. they arent going to want you paying 200 a gal when you should be paying 600.

You are right Jim. Owned by Akzo but essentially a stand alone product. What I like about akzo is they really don't have any bad products. They don't have anything comparable to nason...shopline. Utech and Wanda blow those two out of the water.

I fear the same you do about cheapening the product. I honestly think it has started (don't quote me). I use pro-spray now and have nothing but good to say about it. Nothing wrong with wanda, but having that extra tech support can help sometimes, and so far I've gotten that with Pro-Spray just like I would with Akzo or PPG.

@autorodgirl - cape maroon (we have talked before). I'm looking for a modern color that would work. But everything I find is a metallic, not a solid. The search goes on. I did find a ford color from the late 60s/70s. Royal Maroon. Is that modern enough?

@Jim C, So akzo bought wanda? and didn't PPG just buy akzo?

yes akzo owns wanda. ppg did not buy akzo. i dont think they could. if im not mistaken akzo is actuallly the largest paint company in the world. what ppg bought was akzo's house paint lines for north america

Ahhhhh, that's it. Good call Jim C. Thanks for setting that straight.

imho not all of the PPG line is that great. Omni is not worth taking home . Never tried shopline, never will.
Concept I will buy, otherwise PPG isn't getting my money$.

Actually yes it is. I found that one,Color code B?

Awesome. Looking at a couple of other options thanks to a HAMB thread about maroons. Also looking at 58-97 Jaguar Regency Red, and 78/79 Cadillac Madeira Maroon. Going to spend some time looking through chip books for "the right" maroon for me. I have a jeep that I had colormatched to a maroon color that I had and turned out way too purple once mixed. We tinkered and took the purple out and darkened it up, but its still got that purple tinge to it.

I have noticed that the colors range from purplish red to a copper red, then a maroon that is more black. I'm going for the dark maroon that has no evidence of purple, orange, or blue. All this makes sense in my head. Probably not a lick of sense to anyone else.

Guess I just need to get out into the sunlight with a chip book.

talk to the "boss" at chads paint and audio.i was hesitant to try pro-spray but I gotta tell ya I spoke to barry for a hour in a very technical manner about basecoats and he convinced me to try it.well all I can say is it is by far the best as far as quality vs. price.tried wanda and hated it but I am VERY PICKY about my paints.next up on the list would be diamont great base for about 30% more than prospray.and I have seen no difference in performance.just saw the first car I used pro spray on 2 days ago and she looks as good as the day she left.1 quick thing to make sure ya ask the boss real nice to make sure she mixes it in med. solids.quicker coverage.chad usually mixes low solids variant as they tend to be better for blending.and don't dare ask him to mix in high solids he'll get mad just jokin chad.the high solids variant has given him nothing but problems so he doesn't sell it because he cares about you getting it done right the first time

I've been testing out the High Solids lately since I've put in a machine. I definately use the high solids for solid colors, especially yellows and whites. I haven't noticed any problems there. I talked to my rep about the issue with the high solids that chad told me about months ago, and he said they have improved it. Could be bs, but who knows. I've used it on a few silvers so far but just on a bumper cover or small area. Seemed to work well, but for the most part I do use medium solids. It blends out great and covers great and very blendable matches.

I think this line is going to greatly improve over the next year since being bought by Quest. I was a little worried at first since they own Matrix also. They have already updated the variant system and will have another update this year. I've been using it for the past few months on all my lexus dealer work and have been nothing but impressed. Even the older car colors that I've done match pretty good and they have a pretty good database of the old color codes. More than I am used to with using akzo products.
