Most of what i read on basecoats ppg dupont H.O.K say apply clearcoat after 1 hour.wont it have adhesion problems if i let my basecoat dry overnight.Im doing a frame off on a 56 ford victoria and im using House of kolor base and clear.I have used black epoxy over baremetal then 3 coats of SPI reg 2 k,thanks

Never really heard the one hour statement, I think most most bases state around 24 hours for re-coating with the shortest one, I recall was 13-16 hours.
A couple of the better bases now say no limit as long as car stays in booth.

NUMBER one cause of clear coming off, is solvent tramped in base with Black, dark blue leading the pack.

Most basecoats I've used state one half hour "MINIMUM"
that's under ideal conditions that usually don't exist,
so I always wait at least one hour to error on the side of safety.
But longer is even better, getting the solvents out before clearing.
Of course there's a maximum length too, check your tech sheet,
the bases I use say not to exceed 24 hrs.
So I guess somewhere in the middle would be ideal,
like waiting overnight.
(The number one cause of problems I've encountered
is from rushing the products)

Rushing the basecoat application, and not enough time before clear can cause poor curing of the clear, dieback of the gloss, loss of clarity, solvent pop, and delamination in extreme cases. This is where waterborne color shines-when the color flashes off and the water has evaporated out you don't have any trapped solvents to worry about. The wettest looking jobs I've done were with an overnight wait before applying clear.

Well I ruined a perfectly good paint job by rushing. Painted in the morning and thought "hey, I can clear this afternoon, I've waited long enough according to the recommendations". Well I had some runs in my clear and it actually dragged the silver metallic along with them and ended up with dark streaks that couldn't be sanded out. Nothing that repaint couldn't fix. Waited overnight after repainting and cleared no problem. (no booth or heaters of course)
