Painting running boards.

2008 Chevrolet duramax running boards. Plastic or aluminum not sure chrome finish. I’d like to paint them black or perhaps wrap them in rubber or ??
Can these be painted if I remove the black steps?

Yes, sand with 180 grit if aluminum or 80-120 grit if stainless. 2 coats of black epoxy then paint. Or you can just do 3 coats of black epoxy and put them back on.

Thanks,Would bedliner be a better option then epoxy?
There not stainless ,some pitting on the ends so I dont think their aluminum.Not sure what their made from.

If you're prone to stepping on the bar and not the pads, then yes. But if it was my project, I would do the epoxy with the textured pads. Both products can be easily touched up if damaged. The Epoxy will look much more like an original finish, where the bed liner will look like you sprayed bed liner on them.

I've used wrinkle paint on those bars. Kinda looks neat.
