Painting over chrome plated parts

well i really looked into it to see what was all needed. the 3500 is retail for the complete kit. you really dont need the whole kit. the kit has a bunch of spray guns which most of us already have. you only need the one gun for applying the chrome which is a special design. you dont need all the candy dyes and crap that comes with it either. it comes with primers and some other stuff also which i kept in my deal just to check it out. when i reorderd materials you dont have to use their primers either so it doesnt cost that much to buy more materials. i think all you need is the silver nitrate, wetting agent and their purified deionized water. by the time i eliminated all that stuff in the kit i didnt need i was down to $1800.
 
I looked into Spectra chrome before and again just recently and received their sample material pack with information to do it. Is this the same kinda stuff?
 
the basics are the same. they all are a silver nitrate coating. many of these systems are expensive because of all the specialized equipment. there are usually tanks and hoses and all kinds of crap they want to sell you. i dont know of the spectra is like that. future chrome seems like the simplest system that doesnt need all the crazy hardware. the one key thing to all of these systems is how good the chrome effect comes out really depends on how glossy and smooth the base black is. if that is sprayed with texture or peel then your chrome is going to look lumpy and have the same peel in it. if you really want a perfect chrome finish then you need a perfectly sanded and buffed black base. depends on what your painting really. a set of wheels doesnt matter much but if your going to do a car or part of one then you have to get that flawless finish first.

I have to paint some plastic chrome pieces for a truck this weekend. Should I also use adpro on them?
 
Kind of an old thread but here goes, You can do spray chrome a heck of a lot cheaper than Alsa or spectra. Look up angel guilding and you can buy the chemicals, and a kit to do it. They have several kits to choose from. Biggest expense is the 2 headed silvering gun if you serious which angel guilding sells (paasche). Or you could rigg up two cheap spray guns to do the same thing or use one of their plastic spray guns sold in their kits . Cleanliness and clean water is the key along with wetting agent. Surface needs to be near flawless or better to achieve good results, but that's no different than Alsa or Spectre. Those companies just have refined the process and marketed it at a higher price. In the end it's still just the same silver electroless chemical deposition done on mirrors for centuries. The AG website has instructions and videos to show you the process. Their 2part silver is their newest process. Like SPI, AG is friendly when you have issues or questions. I've used their stuff without issues, in fact I am planning to do a batch of parts within a week or so, for an old Chevy I have, using SPI clear as the base, and the clear to protect it.
 
I think I'm going to paint my chrome truck bumper and was looking for recommendations. Would base/clear or ss be the best option in this application. Victory red is the color....
 
I have blasted and painted a lot of chrome parts over the years, I haven't had any issues with it.. One was on my 99 ram, and it was my tow rig so it got beat on, rough roads etc etc.. I kinda always expected a problem but have never had any issues.
 
The parts I did, when I first started this post seem to have held good so far. I am keeping en eye on them whenever I see the bike. Seems to work good.

Barry, just curious why you are stressing hand sanding. I'm getting ready to paint the bumpers on my '98 GMC and want to get it right the first time.
