Paint repair, peeling clear coat

Hello,

Newbie here, I have painted equipment and small parts, pieces using SS paint. My old 2000 F250 has clear coat peeling on about the upper third of it I have never dealt with clear coat. I am fine with it for what it is, work and hunting truck, Texas pin stripes. But I would like to make it look a bit better for my kid to start driving. I was hoping to shoot it with the SPI black SS down to a body line. Can I get the loose and dead clear off of it, shoot epoxy over it then the single stage.
Thanks for any insight and help.

You will have to sand/feather the peeling clear before any primer is on it. Depending on how much peels as you sand it might be better to take all clear off before priming and painting.

You will need to sand off all the clear and base coat on the entire area that is peeling. Blowing it first with air or a pressure washer will help to remove some of the loose clear that is ready to fall off. I like to use 180 on a DA and sand until I hit primer. You can stop sanding there as long as the primer is still good. Then considering the project you are working on, lightly block the primer with 320 to flatten out the unevenness the DA can leave. If all looks good, give it a coat of epoxy primer then repaint. There are many more steps involved when doing a nicer paint job, but for a work truck this would be my bare minimum approach.
