Paint Cans

Just a random thought here, but why doesn't some company make a paint can (quart and gallon) in a similar shape of activator cans? Or atleast make something different than what we have now so you could pour paint, primer, and clear without making such a freaking mess that you get from the regular cans. I have tried everything on the market that's suppose to decrease the mess when pouring, but they all seem to be junk. Either won't stay on or just don't work. I did have some years ago that I found at Home depot that had a plastic spout similar to a five gallon pail made in a regular gallon can type lid. It worked extremely well but they apparently stopped making them because I haven't seen one in years.

There are a couple of reasons, I can think of off the top of my head.
The primers and paint tend to settle and need to be mixed with a paint stick and that would not be possible with a cone top.

The other reason is cost, even if it would work, you may have noticed that house paint cans are different the automotive due to UN ratings.
The cost of of machinery to make these type cans would be great and volume just not there. There is now only one company that makes the F-style gallon with the wide-mouth plastic top 67mm like we use for clears and the quart cones with the 32MM tops, so we are screwed and every Jan 1st without any fan fair they raise the price 10-25% every year, we just bend over and take it.
This is the one time you wish the Chinese would do something.

And not to mention trying to mix the paint at the jobber level trying to get paint into that little hole.
You could use a funnel but that just doesn't seem very effective to me.

Well see there, that's why I asked....I have been stirring paint since I was tall enough to reach the table in my dad's shop (which has been a few years gone by) and I never thought of the mixing or stirring aspect. Very good points you both have. How about a lid of some kind for the cans that are made now that could be put on when ready to pour? I guess maybe a cost thing again? I will see if I still have one of the one's laying around that I used to buy from the hardware store and try to get a picture. They were great and cheap (around $2.00 each), but they have also disappeared.....It looked as thought someone had taken the plastic spout from a 5 gallon pail and put it in a 1 gallon lid.

On a side note: Barry I LOVE the universal 1:1 clear. We used it for some spot work on a late model camaro and it looks great. I look forward to getting more in the near future. Thanks again for all the phone time....

I've seen those lids with the plastic spout built in. but I prefer to make the mess it seems I always make when I paint.. lol.

Yeah it never fails I always end up with paint dripping down the side of the can, usually right where I grab it the next time too.

A piece of tape works pretty good.

$12 for a mixing bank lid. Install a casement window crank handle on the shaft at the top.

I've looked for mixing bank lids and found a few on eBay. Wasn't sure I'd be able to get more of the same kind down the road so I didn't buy them. Now Rockler Woodworking and Hardware sells mixing lids for quart and gallon paint cans that sells for $15 and $20.

Thanks for all the great ideas and information. I'm not at all new to this line of work, but I learn something everyday.

I just used my first SPI epoxy today. Read this trick on hotrodders.com and tried it. I can't believe it took until age 67 to learn this trick but it worked perfectly. Not a drip. :). By the way, Barry, I loved the SPI epoxy. You have a new customer.

I bought mine from my local PPG paint store. Tom said he sells quite a few of them just for this purpose. Tom was the one that told me the window crank trick.

I made a tool to fit in my cordless drill....it keys onto the pins on the mixing lids. I have lids on every product that needs mixing, even paint. Lets me paint the car in peices weeks apart. (solid colors)
