Today I needed to put the bed on my truck, no one around and due to the gooseneck hitch, it pretty much has to go on exactly. I had it rigged up on my forklift but didn't want to chance scruffing the back of the freshly painted cab. I studied my available supplies and noticed the stack of foam pads from the bottom of SPI shipping boxes. I taped one pad to each corner of the cab and got the bed on perfectly without any collateral damage.
Also I fold one and put it in my pocket when I need to be working close to the floor and can pitch it down to kneel on to save my old knees.

I can't stand wearing knee pads so I used anything I can find, cardboard, folded up rags and such.
Don't have a forklift but these come in handy.

I use mine for all sorts of physical things. When you work alone you need to get creative.
Here I made some adapter plates to attach the rotisserie to the skid-steer bucket so I can jockey it around on uneven and sloped surfaces. I even have pulled it onto the lawn so I could work in the shade.

I was looking at 1840's & 1845"s before I got the 185. Got it to help clear 7 acres of timber and I've used it for so much other stuff that I don't wanna sell it now. :D NIce shop, like the moosehead sign!!

I am a one man operation as well, without the luxury of a fork lift or a shop big enough to drive one around in.
Generally, I have to do as you did except I use my engine hoist and as the famous Abbott & Costello line, it's "step by step, inch by inch"!

Friend came by and asked how much I paid for trimming my tree limbs.
Nothing.
What? You know someone ?
Not exactly. I have another friend with a climbing deer stand.
I worked for 46 yrs basically alone doing service and repair and you just 'figure it out'.
