Hello everyone! First time poster, long time reader…and DIYer. I’m redoing a ‘71 Karmann Ghia convertible. I have the body work done, in SPI gray epoxy primer and currently block sanding/scuffing the entire car inside and outside. My next step is to spray a couple of coats of SPI white epoxy primer due to some bare spots (for blocking contrast since high build is gray) which I’ve ordered and should be here tomorrow or the following day. I also have the SPI 2k high build ready to go after that. Where I’m stuck in my head is the stage at where I should paint the insides of the interior compartment, engine bay and “frunk”. I want to be able to spray the white epoxy next and then spray the high build the next day for a chemical bond. I don’t want to have to sand all the nooks and crannies that I just sanded again on the 3 interior compartments. Any suggestions?

Love your Ghia Maybe don't understand your question but why 2K in the interior parts? Sand the inside then epoxy reduced as a sealer plenty of flash then to paint.

I’m confused about the question. If you don’t want to have to sand anything again then mask it off so you don’t get any material on it.

Unless you’re saying you want to get the interior and frunk paint on within the 7 day window.

The easiest option is to spray your 2k and get it all blocked within a few days so you can spray your sealer over everything and then go to your paint. But us DIYers don’t always work that fast.

I would not want to paint it first and then mask off because you shouldn’t have tape on fresh paint for very long unless you gave it some cure time first.

Thanks El Toro. I don’t want to 2k the insides and you’ve confirmed not to.

Lizer, bingo! I think you understood quite well! I was worried about the timing of the window. I like your suggestion. I’ll mask off the insides, spray the outside with white epoxy and 2k following day. Then block. Once I’m good with blocking, spray white epoxy as sealer on everything then go to paint. Correct? This makes the most sense I think so I don’t have to worry about the window so much. The good thing is I’m on vacation next week just for this. It would be nice to finally get it painted. I just don’t want to rush it.

Those are some fancy pants metal fab. Very nice!

Don't underestimate your time for blocking and 2k. Rarely am I done with 2k after just the first 3 coats. Once I have it blocked off I typically have to go another round. I might try something new where I just put additional coats of 2k on the low spots where guide coat still exists, and then go over the entire panel with additional coat for blocking, so I don't block too much off of the original.
