I just wanted to post my experience with the SPI black as a newbie. I’ve gathered so much information from everyone else I thought I’d add my own in case it would help someone else in the future.


I am using the SPI black Epoxy primer on the interior, firewall and underside of the car. I’ll wait until the spring to do the FW and underside as I really need to get started on reassembling the interior. I’ve got all new sheet metal so it’s all EDP coated metal. The lacquer test came up clean so just a scuff, clean and shoot. After talking with Barry, we came up with using a 1.8 tip on my HF purple gun. I flooded the seam areas, particularly by the mini tubs. Not much to say on the spraying process. Was happy with the spray pattern pretty quickly, but it took me a little bit of time to get a method going so that I wasn’t stepping all over myself or on to newly painted steel. I had it down by the second coat and think it looks great. I played with the idea of doing the outside as well, but think I will leave it to a professional. Don’t want to hear anyone complain about the materials I sued when I’m getting estimates.

I followed up with seam sealer and the LizardSkin sound control. It's a bit cold, so the sound control hasn't completely dried yet. Will do the LizardSkin ceramic insulation when I get a chance.

First time spraying paint, ever. Interesting process. Taping the car sucks. I enjoyed the spraying. I just need to setup more lights.

The LizardSkin gets everywhere. Masking is critical. I have more pics, but it's more of the same.

I know it’s been said elsewhere, but the support at SPI is truly exceptional. He talked through my questions and made me comfortable that I could handle this portion of the build. I can wrench, but body work is like science with a bit of art mixed in. I suck at both.

Looks good! Thanks for sharing. SPI support is the best there is.
 
Have you test fit your trans? We got the entire floor pan as well, did not do much with the firewall since it was mostly ok, but when we put the 700R4 in, we installed it with the motor, no fenders or front end on. When we had to drop it, it was a night mare getting to the top 4 bolts off the engine. We would have preferred to have beaten or cut out the tunnel before finishing paint. Just one thing we did not think of that might help before you get too far.
 
The car was assembled and running with a TH2004R before I took it apart. It ran pretty well with that 4 speed and fit fine. Just the usual tight fit with the HEI. If it bugs me, I can go with a small cap distributor later. FYI, the Ceramic Insulation is done (looks the same as the 3rd pic above, but white). Working on AC and wiring now.

Where did you get the Lizard Skin? Is it available in rattle can? Before you applied the lizard skin did you have to sand out the primer? Your project looks awesome. I'm just a backyard hack trying to learn the basics and could use your input.

Sorry for the delay on the response. I purchased the Lizard Skin from Jeg's (it does not come in a rattle can). Similar prices everywhere. I didn't use their spray kit as I have a paddle mixer. I bought this one from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TZEIBM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It needed a bit higher pressure to get a nice pattern and I also cut the tip down to about 1.5 inches.

My order of events:
  • Scuff the EDP
  • Spray 2 coats of epoxy (let dry overnight)
  • Seam sealer the next morning
  • 2 coats of LizardSkin Sound Control that afternoon
  • 2 coats of Ceramic Insulation the next morning (looks the same as the SC, but white).
According to SPI and LizardSkin, if you spray the LizardSkin within 7 days of the epoxy, you don't need to scuff. It seems to have worked well. Will let you know in about 5 or 10 years ;).
