new guy shopping for a gun

Forgive me as I am totally new to this but I am planning on spraying spi epoxy this spring and if my timetable allows I have a base coat with a touch of pearl in it and I plan to use universal clear later on. Currently I am not planning on this being for anything more than my toys but I really don't want to be bullheaded not ask for any help and just pick something out and not be able to use it.

In reading here and several different places the (I know for give me) harbor freight purple gun, sharpe finex , iwata , and sata guns come up a lot. I would hope that whatever I would buy would be capable of shooting all the paints/primers without too many additions/changes, and I'm also on a pretty tight budget but don't want to waste my money either. (BTW not really interested in the HF gun but like I said it pops up a lot and you guys seem to be about the smartest bunch around)

If you're on a tight budet this is a decent cheapy gun, keep in mind though the quality control on any of the lower priced guns isn't always good so there is a chance you might a lemon but Summit is a good company to deal with if there's problems. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-02-50014/overview/
It'll spray epoxy, base, and clear just fine.

Excellent thanks. I was also just thinking that I only have a 60 gal 220 compressor so I wouldn't even know if it would be able to keep up with a high volume gun

That summit gun isn't an air hog compared to most of the cheap guns, 3.9cfm, I bet it'll work just fine if your compressor can keep up with most air tools. The same basic gun is also sold by others: http://www.ebay.com/itm/H7667-Professional-LVLP-Spray-Gun-1-5mm-/290956444319?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item43be5b029f&vxp=mtr

I've got an Mstar gun I use for primer work that's been going strong for 15 years without a rebuild, now I see they offer an LVLP model: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LVLP-Evo-t-V3-1-3mm-Spray-Gun-STAR-Original-Low-Pressure-Evot-/261185798106?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item3ccfe2ffda

Whats the pros/cons of HVLP vs LVLP? Since I plan to buy a better gun, if I get LVLP, I likely won't have to buy a bigger compressor. Thoughts?

Most LVLP's don't use that much less air, check the CFM ratings.
If your compressor doesn't put out enough, then consider a
conventional gun, some of those use a lot less.
There's still a lot of painters using conventional guns,
you don't have to have HVLP.

What are the advantages of hvlp? By conventional do you mean gravity feed or siphon feed?

Conventional guns, like HVLP's come either way.
You can get them in siphon feed or gravity feed.
the advantage of HVLP is it uses less paint, has a higher transfer efficiency.
It's a moot point though, most painters turn up the PSI to get them to spray as
well as a conventional, and at the higher PSI they make just as big a cloud,
loosing their advantage.
It was government regulations that made painter switch.
Some of painters still use conventionals except when the local inspectors are around.

They are both very good guns, the LV will use a little less air. Some of the HVLP guns don't do as well with standard 1/4" air line fittings and when you upgrade to hi-flow fittings there is a noticeable difference. The LV guns aren't as fussy.
