Mustang hood blackout

What is the procedure for doing the black on the hood? My hood was base coated with Motobase and cleared with 4 coats of Universal clear about a year ago. Two weeks ago I wet sanded the whole hood with 600 grit to do a flow coat with 3 more coats of Universal clear. Now I'm asking do I sand and buff out the areas that stay Acapulco blue and then put the stencil kit (spray mask) on and then sand the rest of the hood with 600 or 400 for the SEM Hot Rod Black? I realize I need to wipe it

down with wax and grease remover before and after sanding. The hood is for a 1969 Mustang Mach 1.

When I did this I had everything painted and buffed - I taped everything off that was to stay shiny. Then I scuffed/ wet sanded everything that was gonna be satin ( being real careful around the tape edges ) then painted it

Pay extra attention to the edges. You want to get it completely scuffed/sanded right up to the edge. Not being sure of your masking, (you mentioned a stencil) use a high quality fine line tape as well. I would stay away from the 3M blue vinyl tape as it stretches and is hard to get a straight line. (at least for me) Tape it off, sand it, pull the tape and re-tape. You''ll have to be careful doing that though. Once re-taped and masked, grey scotchbrite any missed areas, and scuff up to, and over the tape. Do that carefully and lightly. Blow off and proceed.

Sounds good, thanks. The stencil kit is a pre cut vinyl spray mask, I use this stuff all the time at work for muli color signs and it works flawless. I will use the 3m fine line first for my sanding then lay down the spray mask then scuff.

Sounds like you will be fine seeing you have a lot experience with it. Not knowing the experience level of folks when they ask a question, I always try to go over the basics of stuff.
Good luck with it. Hope it turns out great. :)
