MS or Universal?

I'm getting ready to paint my second project. First project was SPI MS clear (slow activator) over SPI white base. It turned out reasonably well but I had some wave in the clear. I was able to fix most of the wave by blocking it before buffing. Second job will be a red metallic PPG DBC base and SPI clear. What is the best clear for a newb? I have an Iwata LPH400 gun with a 1.4 tip. Planning to get a purple cap for shooting the metallic base.

I am guessing this question was asked and answered on the old forum but it seems to be long gone.

Thanks,
Don

UC might be a better choice. It's always the "newb choice," but since you have used MS it's really a tossup. Maybe you ought to buy a quart kit of the UC and paint a scrap panel with to see how you like it? It's pretty hard to go wrong with it, especially if you are buffing. If you need an "out of the gun" finish with no buffing, MS might have the edge, Though UC can be sprayed perfectly if the correct technique is used.

Been wondering what the difference is between the two. MS always turns out much flatter than UV for me, so what is the advantage of one over the other?

It's mainly in the solvent blend. UC flashes faster and is harder to run, both good traits for a hobbyist clear. MS is most comparable to UC with slow hardener, though in my opinion it is even a bit slower, with more slow tail solvents.

Barry might correct me on this, but it's what I have experienced.

So the finished product is the same? What about the HS? Have not tried it yet.

I've been spraying some ms clear, and it's some nice stuff. I'd post some pics, but not sure how...?

. . .

Wow, I thought the MS flashed very quickly. In fact, too quickly for my temperature range so I was thinking of trying UC with the very slow activator on the next job. Now you have me scratching my head and walking in circles.

uc is a little thinner than the ms clear but end result is the same. in other words there is no difference in quality of each. same resin, uv, etc. the uc with extra slow will be the slowest of all and on a overall i think is the best choice from 80deg on up. really makes the uc lay out nice and you dont have to run around the car to avoid dry spots. i think an extra slow act is being developed for the ms clear.

The MS sprays real nice however in 90 degree plus temps it was flashing so quick I couldn't imagine it having any time to flow out. Added some 885 to the final coat hoping to keep it soft a little longer and that seemed to help some.
I am anxious to try the UC with the very slow activator and see how that compares.

past couple cars i did were on 95deg days. in my booth using uc with very slow it was just that very slow. really nice, plenty of flow time. that activator completely chages that clear. the one thing about spi clears is they have always been fast. never really bothered me since i am usually doing smaller parts. i have resto customers that always compalined the stuff was too fast and didn't like it because of that. at the time i really didn't understand but now the more and more cars i am doing i can see it and agree. i love that very slow. one of the best things that barry added to the line.

UNCLE!!!! I give!

Ok, I will make a slow activator for the MS clear, it has been against my grain to have a bunch of activators for each clear but yeaterday made a rush super fast for the 5100 and a rush fast for the 4100, to please two jobbers, so I guess the MS could at least have two activators.
Give me a couple of weeks, so I can get the red done and caught up as we just had our second largest month ever and we are running low on everything.

How many manufactures can you get that with.. Top shelf service.. Second to none in the industry.. The owner listens and makes changes to please his customer base and improve relations.. Bravo ole buddy.. Only wish i had found SPI sooner!!

I have written a formula for the new slow MS Activator, we are making it now and will have ready to ship Monday.

Part number is 3503-4 and of course can be blended with the normal to make your own flash dry times.

I did not go totally ballistic on the slowing of the speed and we are making the smallest batch we can of a 100 cans, so I can adjust as needed with your feedback.

I would say it should be good for the 100 degree days but only you guys can tell me that as i was conservative here.
